Nats beat Brewers 5-1; roster moves aplenty

WASHINGTON 5 Milwaukee 1 (ESPN Boxscore)

Depleted Nats Do Just Enough to Win - The Post
Pena's power helps Nats win at home - The Wash. Times
Nationals' bats come alive just in time - The Free Lance-Star
Error starts ball rolling - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
The Nats were not doing much through the first five innings. The only hit was a home run by Wily Mo Peña, his first of 2008. Milwaukee was hitting the ball well, but only had one run to show for it. It all changed in the sixth when Brewers starter Jeff Suppan walked 2B Felipe López. An apparent double-play by by SS Cristian Guzman was bobbled by SS J.J. Hardy and both runners were safe. Ryan Zimmerman doubled López home. CF Lastings Milledge sacrificed Guzman home after a 1B Dmitri Young was hit by a pitch and Aaron Boone pinch ran. C Jesús Flores doubled Zimmerman and Boone home to complete the scoring. Those were the only two hits of the game other than Peña's homer in the second. Getting only three hits isn't good, but getting runs out of every one of them is great.

Odalis Pérez started for the Nats, but left after four innings with a cut on his finger. RF Elijah Dukes also left early after fouling off a pitch on his foot. He is listed as day-to-day.

Bowden Hopes Roster Shuffle Sends Message - The Post
Both Chico and Schroder go to minors - The Wash. Times
Roster shake-up bolsters bullpen - The Free Lance-Star
GM Jim Bowden made some roster changes yesterday. Matt Chico and Chris Schroder were sent down to AAA Columbus. The team hopes Chico can get back on track like Jason Bergmann did. OF Ryan Langerhans was also called up to fill the spot left by injured Austin Kearns. Langerhans was surprisingly hitting .306 in Columbus. Relievers lefty Charlie Manning and righty Brian Sanches were also called up with Sanches getting last night's win.

DICK HELLER - A toast to black baseball in D.C. - The Wash. Times
There are two exhibits about Negro Leagues baseball right now. The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., 801 K St. NW (which was briefly the City Museum) is showing "Separate and Unequaled: An Illustrated History of Black Baseball in the District of Columbia" and a traveling exhibit about from the Negro Leagues Museum. The former exhibit is being presented by the Anacostia Community Museum.
