Even when it is a little league appearance,Nats Elijah Dukes can do no right
Now It's the Community Giving Back to Dukes - The PostEven when embattled Elijah Dukes is doing a good thing, something goes wrong:
He stayed for the speeches. He stayed for the parade of Little Leaguers -- all 54 teams' worth. He stayed for the cheerleaders and the introduction of the high school team and the national anthem -- perhaps getting a little fidgety, but staying nonetheless. Finally, Elijah Dukes took the microphone, said a few words to the kids and parents about "working hard" and "having fun." Exactly the type of stuff a big-time professional athlete would say on opening day of the local Little League.Dukes was late, got fined $500 and was benched. Here's to zero tolerance policies! Now, the Great Falls Little League is raising money to pay his fine even though Dukes was paid for this "freelance" appearance. Just another day in NatsTown!
And then . . . "Boom," said Jim Mraz, president of the Great Falls Little League, "he sprints to his car and he was gone."
Hopefully, someone in the team's PR office (we have one?) will figure out a way to save a little face for the franchise and have some fun with this incident so that everybody comes away happy.
