BOSTON — Since neither the Ombudsman nor his attorney was able to pick me up from Logan Airport, I relied on the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, aka “the T”, to get me Harvard Square (more on that later). I thought, “No problem, I’ve been on the T both times I visited Boston and I do enjoy taking subways.”
The most direct way to get from Logan to Harvard Square is to take the Silver Line, a bus rapid transit mode, from Terminal A to South Station and pick up the Red Line. While called bus rapid transit, there is nothing particularly rapid about the Silver Line at the airport. Mostly, this is because of passengers carrying luggage (there is a bin for it, which many passengers ignored), and because it was Friday afternoon. This is likely true for the shuttle to the Blue Line Airport station as well. The Silver Line does utilize the Ted Williams Tunnel, and has some of its own right away above and below ground, but it never exceeds 25 miles in that right away. In conclusion, bus rapid transit is still a bus.
My Red Line ride out to Harvard was uneventful, but crowded, no big deal.
The second issue is my quest for T mugs.
Back in 2004, I found this mug at a station somewhere on the Green Line, maybe Government Center, but possibly somewhere else. I’ve wanted a complete set for some time now, so I contacted the MBTA a few weeks before my visit. This was my response.
The MBTA does not sell or operate a store that offers MBTA merchandise.
If you have seen these items in the past, they were created by private vendors and sold privately.
We recommend doing an online search using Google ” MBTA MUG” and a list of available products from private vendors will be produced.
Hmmm, odd that they were not aware that these were available in their stations, nor that the one I have has a “©MBTA” on it.
I didn’t get back on the T the rest of the weekend, so I didn’t get to explore the Green Line looking for the shop I found the mug in, and none of the souvenir shops in and around Boston could help. As for the Google Search, I did turn up this, but I prefer the style I already have.
Has anybody seen the kind of T mug I’m talking about? Maybe I just need to go back and get on the Green Line.
