Reggie Jackson called Yankee Stadium public address announcer Bob Sheppard the “voice of God.” Mr. October was on to something there, Sheppard’s voice was as big as old Yankee Stadium. Sheppard died at age 99, just three months shy of 100.
Shepperd was the greatest p.a. announcer who ever lived and his simple, elegant style — “Now batting for the Yankees, the shortstop, No. 2, Derek Jeter, No. 2” should be the model for all p.a. announcers. That introduction will continue, as Sheppard’s recording of Jeter is always used for the Yankees captain.
