What is a trip to down the Shore without a blimp sighting?

AVALON, N.J. – I have no idea if Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is a good insurance company or not, but they have my appreciation for sponsoring a blimp. For the past several years, I have been seeing it when I visit Seven Mile Island.

I’m a big fan of airships, having grown up in the Goodyear blimp’s flightpath back to Dulles Airport and having grandparents who lived in Lakehurst, N.J., home of the Naval Air Station for lighter than air flight.

Other aircraft I saw during my week at the Shore:

2 Chinook helicopters
3 F-18 jets
2 F-16 jets
2 A-10 jets
1 red biplane
1 old-style bubble canopy helicopter
1 Coast Guard “Airwolf” helicopter (meh, I see them fly over my condo all the time; lower too)
Countless airliners

and of course the ancient monoplanes towing signs. Between them and the blimp, couldn’t help but put a song in my head:

Somebody else enjoyed the blimp:
