Blue White Roundtable: Penn State vs. Temple
Devon from NittanyWhiteout.com has this week’s questions
We’re a quarter of the way into the season, and at this point we’re starting to see how Penn State stacks up this year. What’s the biggest positive and negative you’ve seen so far?
The biggest positive is Rob Bolden. He has more poise as a true freshman than several Penn State quarterbacks in the last 15 years had as seniors.
The biggest negative has been the tackling. I really though the defensive line and linebackers would just reload, but that has not been the case.
The Big Ten has had mixed success this first month–Ohio State beat Miami, but Iowa lost to Arizona. Michigan and Michigan State have been better than advertised, but Penn State and Wisconsin have underperformed. As a conference, how do you think the Big Ten stacks up?
I think the Big Ten is in the middle of the road. Losses like Iowa’s to Arizona hurt. Minnesota losing to South Dakota is just embarrassing. I don’t think that anybody had any delusions about Penn State beating Alabama. The wins over Notre Dame by Michigan and Michigan State probably make the conference look better than they should.
It was recently announced that Penn State had extended the Temple series for another three years. How do you feel about playing the Owls on a regular basis?
I am on board with Penn State vs. Temple being extended, especially since Temple is improving. The Owls are actually a perfect opponent for the Nittany Lions this week — they are a decent program now and will challenge Penn State in ways that Youngstown State and Kent State never could. I am more excited about this game than any others thus far which is really weird to type.
Anyway, I got off on a tangent there, but Temple is fine with me. The 2 for 1 deal with a program we’re used to playing is good, especially since the 1 is a game in Philadelphia. That is a very convenient road game, especially for those of us on the I-95/ Northeast Corridor.
Temple’s Al Golden seems to be a popular choice to replace Joe Paterno, whenever it is that JoePa decides to call it quits. How would you feel about Golden taking over as the head coach of Penn State?
I need to see more from Golden to decide if he is someone I want succeeding Joe Paterno. So far, he’s done very well at Temple and makes him a candidate in my mind.
