An unlikely rally and a surprise moveNats Insider
The Washington Nationals were on their way to another dispiriting loss last night. John Lannan had given up 3 runs to the Houston Astros in the first inning and the Nats were not generating any offense. They finally got a run through in the 7th inning, but still trailed 3-1 in the eighth with 2 outs — Warner Wolf takes over from here:

Alright, let’s go to the videotape, bottom of the eighth inning, 0-2 count and BOOM, Pudge Rodriguez hits one off the FAIRPOLE, game tied at 3.

Thank you, Warner. Thank you, Warner. Felipe Paulino gave up the Rodriguez homer and then a single to Roger Bernadina. Justin Maxwell then walked and Adam Kennedy knocked in Bernadina for the winning run. Danny Espinosa then walked and Matt Lindstrom came in to pitch for Houston. Ian Desmond, Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman all singled against him, running the score up to 8-3. Lindstrom left without recroding an out.

Henry Villar
retired Michael Morse to end the inning, but hte damage was done.

Lannan wound up pitching 7 innings, the last six without giving up another run. It was his 5th consecutive quality start, but not enough to get his standard 9th win the of the season. He should get another chance or two. Tyler Clippard earned his 10th win, the second D.C. pitcher to do that this season. Has that been done since 2005? I doubt it.

The Nats also clinched their 63 win of the season, meaning they will not lose 100 games for the third season in a row. Baby-steps, baby-steps.

The Nats really needed this win, after the loss the night before and the Texans beating the Redskins on Sunday, Houston was really giving Washington a hard time.

Jim Riggleman pulled Drew Storen after the young closer gave up a home run and a walk in the 9th. Storen had 2 outs and a 4 run lead. OVERMANAGING? Sean Burnett finished the game on one pitch.

I caught most of the game on radio and was reminded that I am really going to miss Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler once the season ends. They better be signed through next season.
