Nats vs. Brewers Q&A with David I. Leavitt

David I. Leavitt, who tweets at @LeavittDC, has been a Nats fan for six years and a Brewers fan for 34 years. You may remember him from the Redskins vs. Packers Q&A last football season and several Penn State vs. Wisconsin previews (2008 2007 2006). We address on a variety of topics, including who [...]

Nats waste strong Jordan Zimmermann start, fall to Cliff Lee, Phillies

Entering the sixth inning, there seemed to be a collective awareness of twitter that Washington Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann had not allowed a runner to reach base. So, two pitches later Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz reached all the bases when he homered. That would prove to be enough for the visitors, but two errors [...]

Paul Lukas chronicles the sorry state of DC sports proofreading

Sports typos abound in Washington – ESPN Page 2
UniWatch columnist Paul Lukas has the complete rundown of the spelling errors and otherwise that have plauged DC teams, especially the Nationals. Dan Steinberg of DC Sports Bog is profiled as well.
Oh and Ball-Wonk was not the first Nats blog. While I was not and have never [...]

New Penn State football jerseys are official

The news that Penn State drop the attractive trim on Nittany Lions football jerseys is, unfortunately, official. Spider Caldwell explains it in this video:

I disagree with the decision, because the contrasting trim made the jerseys look better. The new jerseys look cheap.
Previously, Guido D’Elia was taking credit for these “throwbacks.” His name is not mentioned [...]

Nats get to Halladay, but too little to late in loss to Phillies

The reverse lock could not make it two in a row.
John Lannan pitched one of his better games against the Philadelphia Phillies, but for the Washington Nationals starter, 3 runs (2 earned) over 6 innings. It wasn’t enough though, because Roy Halladay held the Nats scoreless through 8. The Nats got it going in the [...]

Game 1: Capitals beat Rangers 2-1 in overtime

A “greasy goal” from Alex Ovechkin in the 3rd period and Jason Arnott intercepted a lazy clear and fed Alexander Semin for the game-winner in overtime.
New York Rangers 1
Washington Capitals 2

Nats beat Phillies to reach .500

It figures that a really satisfying win by the Washington Nationals is one I don’t get to blog about right away. When you have a young child in the house, things like blogging are at the mercy of their sleep schedule. I called for the reverse lock yesterday and it happened. Yay.
I’m happy that Jayson [...]

Capitals-Rangers 1st round playoffs prediction

Somehow, the Washington Capitals had an eight-game losing streak in the middle of the season and got shutout about a dozen times, yet still finished first in the Eastern Conference. The post-trade deadline surge and a Philadelphia Flyers slump is the recent reasons. The Caps are an odd team, but one that changed from a [...]

In case you are wondering why I have never identified myself as a Virginian

When I was at Penn State, explaining where I was from was tricky. If I said Virginia, even Northern Virginia, I was usually greeted informed that I was often mocked by Pennsylvaninans* for being from the South. Um, not really, because as a former co-worker from Central Virginia via Texas told me, “you are way [...]

A minor marketing success: Nats pocket schedules at Harris Teeter

ARLINGTON, Va. — I have been critical of the marketing of the Washington Nationals in the past, so I thought I would share a positive sign. For years, I’ve wondered why I can’t find a Nats pocket schedule anywhere but the ticket windows at Nationals Park. I am pleased that this season, Harris Teeter, the [...]
