I did not see this coming. The Washington Nationals just swept the Philadelphia Phillies in Citizens Bank Park to win the season series 10-8. The entered the series needing two win 4 games in 3 days against the NL East champions and did it with 2 rookie pitchers, another prospect and John Lannan. They won 9 of the last 11 games against the Phillies this year. Unbelievable!
Since 2006, the Ombudsman and I have been having a “mayor’s bet” the Cheesesteak/Half-Smoke Challenge. I won the first year, but as the Phillies dominated the Nats, I owed him a lot of half-smokes. So, I am really excited to be on the right side of the wager for a change, plus the universal currency of basking in the reflective glory of the winning team, while he basks in the reflective humiliation of his losing team, because right now that’s totally what he’s doing and not wondering who the Phillies will face in the NLDS.
Oh and Davey Johnson pulling Doug Slaten with 2 outs and a 6-0 lead in the ninth for the CSX Move of the Game– masterful trolling Davey (and Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler for choosing that as the move of the game). Would have been even better if Todd Coffey didn’t give up a run after coming in, but details, details.
The Nats are now 76-79 with 6 games to play since one was cancelled due to rain. The Atlanta Braves come to town for a 3 game series needing every win they can get as they try to hold on for the NL Wild Card. After that, the Nats make their final trip to play the Florida Marlins who are leaving whatever the Dolphins stadium is called this week. Given the stakes for the Braves and the Marlins inexplicable dominance over the Nats makes me certain that the goal of a winning season is simply unattainable.
I’ll have more tomorrow, good night!
