Starting Sunday, every Washington Nationals player is in the best shape of their life and Panera jokes become unavoidable. That’s right, pitchers and catchers report to Viera, Fla. for the 8th spring training since baseball return to D.C. We may even get snow up here which I find appropriate. Of course, spring training is more exciting to look forward to than anything else. Coverage ramps up, but nothing really happens. We still have about seven long weeks to go until the regular season which will feel even farther away by about Wednesday.
Mark Zuckerman at CSN Washington had a five part-preview this week. My commentary follows each link:
Spring storylines: Zimmerman’s contract (Don’t screw this up!)
Nats spring storylines: Who’s in center? (i.e. why they won’t be a playoff team)
Nats who need to bounce back (Jayson Werth and Adam Laroche’s shoulder)
Nats spring storylines: Too many starters (inventory!)
Spring storylines: Harper tries to make club (Bryce Harper can’t come up before June)
Amanda Comak’s preview for The Wash. Times
As winter turns to spring, Nationals baseball begins anew in Florida
Just in! Thomas Boswell’s pre-spring column is so Boswellian, you just have think he ripped open the packet and poured the Kool-Aid crystals straight down his throat: Washington Nationals 2012 team will open an exciting era in D.C. baseball
The Post is mimicking Bleacher Report with this preview
Peter Gammons also thinks highly of the Nats: Turning point isn’t just a talking point in D.C. – MLB.com
Now, isn’t this much more fun than talking about Bryce Harper’s maturity or Phillies fans coming to D.C.?
