As mentioned in a Thom Loverro Wash. Times column (Fighting Nazis was once as American as baseball itself), on this day in 1942, Walter Johnson faced Babe Ruth one last time in Yankee Stadium. In between games of a doubleheader, the 55 year old Johnson faced the 48 year old Ruth, helping raise $80,000 for the Army-Navy Service Fund.
A newsreel of the Johnson pitching to Ruth:
The Big Train made the Babe look bad on a number of pitches, but Ruth eventually put one in the right field stands.
Oh and the Nats and Yanks split with Washington coming back in the 9th of game 1 one and New York winning game 2 in a shutout (Baseball Reference).
Friend of the blog, Vince Guerrieri adds this note:
The ump is my boy Billy Evans — who hired Johnson as #Indians manager when he was GM a decade earlier.
