I don't go out that much, but when I do, I have a good time. So, take
a moment, prepare yourself mentally and physically, and I will tell you
a little about what is now known as:
That's right, Big Willie Style. Why just go out in jeans and a T-shirt
when you can do it with swagger and savvy. So, what is all involved with
BWS? Well, I'm glad that rhetorical question was asked, here's the list:
-
Clothes
-
Clothes
definitely make the man and for BWS, they are very important!
The ultimate expression of BWS style is follows; pinstripe gray suit,
navy shirt, white tie, blue handkerchief, black shoes, navy rain coat.
The Nittany Lion lapel pin (nicknamed the "Spanky" pin, having come from
Graham Spainer's office) is a must!
When things are a little more "casual" a camel's hair jacket, with
dark shirt can be substituted, as seen here:
Also, a new spin on BWS was created this summer, and its based on the
wardrobe of the POTUS, and is called "Slick Willie Style.
"A sharkskin
suit, bright blue shirt (also known as "intern blue" since all the young
interns wear them in D.C.), silver tie, black shoes completes this look.
It is not as hot as the BWS suit, which is wool. Say what you will about
Mr. Clinton's (insert here), but, the man is dressing pretty well these
days.
Reports of the appearance of a "wife beater" that says "MEDIA STUDIES"
are wholly unsubstantiated.

Strutin' music
The official song of Big Willie Style is NOT "by Will Smith. It's actually
an older song called "Pick Up the Pieces" by
Average
White Band. Nothing personifies what BWS is better than Scottish
funk.
Big Willie Style can happen anywhere, in theory. Thus far, it's been
put in practice in two commonwealths (Virginia and Pennsylvania), on federal
District (Washington D.C), and Maryland and Colorado too. Let be known
that the states of New Jersey and New York are also marked territory. Some
notable places that have seen Big Willie Style are:
-
Millie and Al's, in Adams Morgan, D.C.*
-
Tortilla Coast, Capital Hill, D.C.
-
Irish Times's, Capital Hill, D.C.
-
Murphy's, Old Town, Alexandria, Va.
-
Clyde's, Tyson's Corner, Va.
-
The Darkhorse in ... Boulder, Co.
-
The Darkhorse in ... State College, Pa.
-
Tony's Big Easy, State College, Pa.*
-
John Henry's, State College, Pa.
-
Cafe 210 West, State College, Pa.*
-
The Phyrst, State College, Pa.*
-
The Gingerbread Man, State College, PA
-

State College.com's "
bar
tour" has information on Happy Valley watering holes
The origin of BWS dates to November '98 after a night of bar hopping
in State College. It just became apparent that only way to was the BWS
style way.
Prehistoric BWS - March 17, 1998, first night out in State College at
the Phyrst. Also, the immediate prehistory to BWS was an infamous trip
to the Gingerbread Man in November 1998.

Special Feature - How to make a
good gin and tonic
For best results, you will need:
-
gin
- I prefer Gordon's, although Beefeater, Booth's, or Bombay
Sapphire work well too. Tanqurey is overpriced and not very good.
-
tonic
- here is the most important part, you need cold, unopened,
tonic water in a glass bottle, I prefer Schweps, but Canada Dry works too.
-
lime
- freshly cut (lemon for you southerners)
Add ice to 12 oz. glass (or Solo
TM
cup
if at beach), followed by gin about 2 inches up glass. Add tonic water.
Squeeze lime into glass, rubbing around rim last. Stir. Add drink umbrella.
Serves one.
