75 years since the Hindenburg disaster

I have mentioned several times that I enjoy blimps and used to spend some time in Lakehurst, N.J. area. On this day, 75 years ago, the Hindenberg exploded and crashed there at what is now Lakehurst JFB. Hanger 1, which would have housed the Hindenberg during its stay, is still an active airship hanger.

Lakehurst has a blimp again

Navy airship to keep flying for at least one year – Asbury Park Press
I just found out that the U.S. Navy has had a blimp at what used to be called the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. It will be sticking around through 2012 too.
Emblazoned with its 1920s-style fin insignia and black letters reading “U.S. NAVY,” [...]

An amusing little article about old Garden State Parkway tollbooths

A strange graveyard where N.J.’s tollbooths go to die – Star-Ledger
Old Garden State Parkway tollbooths that have been rendered obsolete by one-way (and eventually, all electronic) tolling are sent to a “graveyard” near the Asbury Park toll plaza.

50 years ago the Ash Wednesday Storm the cut up Long Beach Island, NJ

While the storm was neither a hurricane, nor a classic nor’easter, its impact was so powerful, the U.S. Weather Bureau gave it a name: “The Great Atlantic Storm.” That name was later changed by Outer Banks resident, Aycock Brown. Referencing the solemn holiday that shared the day the storm unleashed its fury he named it [...]

Traffic light removal on Garden State Parkway delayed

Garden State Parkway traffic light removal project in Cape May delayed until next year – AP/NJ.com
When was a kid, I remember being very surprised that there were traffic lights on the Garden State Parkway, a toll super-highway, in Cape May County. They are still there, but their time is finally coming to a close. Those [...]

I finally got to try Tony Luke’s cheesesteak, roast pork sandwich

WILDWOOD CREST, N.J. —I have been trying to sample all the main Philly Cheesesteak places over the last few years, but I don’t get to the city of brotherly love that often. Judging by the Tony Luke’s Web site, a lot of the growing chain’s appeal is built around the personality of Tony “Luke” Lucidonio [...]

Springer’s changed its sign (again)

STONE HARBOR, N.J. — Last year, one of the first things I noticed when I got to Seven Mile Island was that Springer’s, the ice cream parlor that my family has been going to for at least 4 generations, had changed its sign. I didn’t photograph it though, so I figured I would this year.
Then [...]

Fred’s Tavern isn’t just a popular t-shirt, its a bar too

STONE HARBOR, N.J. — On Seven Mile Island, Fred’s Tavern t-shirts are ubiquitous. After seeing so many of the t-shirts being worn around, we figured we’d check out the bar there. Could it live up to the hype of scores of vacationers wearing the t-shirt?
After dining at the new Carney’s in Stone Harbor, we checked [...]

Carney’s in Stone Harbor is worthy of the old Henny’s space

STONE HARBOR, N.J. — After 75 years, Henny’s in Stone Harbor was sold and closed in 2008. It was going to be knocked down and turned into a resort hotel. Well, the financing for that apparently dried up and the space reamins. Two different restaurants, Blackfish and the White Heron Grill (I think) came and [...]
