Places I went in 2009

Every year I do a tally of places I have been. The two ways for a location to qualify — I had a meal there (non-fast food) or spent the night there. Sometimes, I make exceptions that rule though, like for apple-picking.
Alexandria, Va.Arlington, Va.Falls Church, Va.Great Falls, Va.McLean, Va.Purcellville, Va.Reston, Va.Vienna, Va.Washington, D.C.Newark, Del.Ellicot City, [...]

Vienna Inn’s semicentennial nears

Vienna Inn prepares to turn 50 – The Fairfax TimesThe beloved Vienna Inn is approaching 50 years in business. This is just a fairly standard article about the history of my hometown bar, but I quibble with this statement:
The walls, saturated with the smell and color of smoke…
Hardly — at least compared to what it [...]

Time running out for Bush to visit my high school

Three consecutive presidents, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton all visited my high school. For all I know, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy visited it too. However, with barely a week left in his term, George W. Bush has not been to James Madison High School in [...]

La Coupe Hauxer wrap-up

VIENNA, Va. — We had the annual La Coupe Hauxer season-end trophy presentation on Sunday at the Vienna Inn. Brad, representing the NJ Devils, won La Coupe Hauxer for the third consecutive time. He has gotten so nonchalant about the whole thing that he did not wear a Devils sweater. At least he didn’t put [...]

New(ish) Web site for Times Community papers

Northern Virginia’s Times Community Papers has a new and improved Web site for its Fairfax County weeklies — fairfaxtimes.com. I’m not sure how long ago this new site debuted, because I rarely went the previous, zwire powered Web site because it was awful. I’m glad that when I click on my hometown of Vienna/Oakton (which [...]
