Through the Penn State Washington Program, I was placed in an internship with the Democratic National Committee. I begin the last week of May in the Interactive Media Division. The internship runs through August. I will working on The Hill, at DNC Headquarters, just four blocks south of the Capital.

I want to thank the College, particularly professors Clay Calvert and Ford Risley, advisor Kristen Werner, internship coordinator Bob Richards and especially Mike Skonieczny for all the assistance they provided in getting this internship.

About the Internship

As the "web intern" at the DNC, I was responsible for updating press releases and news to the DNC website ( www.democrats.org ) daily. On a typical day, I took care of GOP Candidate News, DNC News, and most days I worked on Press Releases or similar content.  I used the program Frontier by Userland, a web management data base program, for this work.

What became my biggest project was our Spanish language content. I was responsible for determining what would be translated and posted to the public site. I worked with the translator to get information for Spanish speaking constituents uploaded large portion of the website was translated, such as the Party Headquarters section.

Throughout the internship I  worked on the Voter Outreach Pages, redesigning the index page, and standardizing format of the Outreach pages, in addition to keeping them up to date with current news and press releases. This project have been accomplished using HomeSite 4.0, a web editor. I have also revised the State Party Addresses page to include web addresses of the parties.

On the intranet site DncNet (non-public) I helped maintain the index page, the softball page, and the Summer 1999 interns page, which is known as InterNet. That will be available online soon. I also used HomeSite 4.0 for this project, along with a Cannon Digital Video camera for the intern photo gallery. Other tasks included scanning (with HP ScanJet), troubleshooting the web site, updating new links to existing pages, and viewing submissions for site links to be included in the DNC site. I also did graphics work with Adobe PhotoShop 4.0. I also offered my suggestions on content and design of DNC pages with IMD Director Linda Sinoway and IMD Deputy Director Eric Folley. On multiple occasions, I filled in for Eric when he was out of the office and I also ran the department one day in office when both Linda and Eric were away.

I was very pleased with the experience, I felt that it was well worth my time and effort. I learned a great deal interning there. I truly had a meaningful hands on internship that utilized my skills and taught me new ones, instead of making copies and getting coffee. I am in debt to Linda and Eric for the opportunities they gave me.
