Capital Punishment DFA'ed - William World News - William F. Yurasko's blog

Capital Punishment DFA'ed

This morning, Stan Kasten was probably lighting a cigar with a $100 bill. Jim Bowden probably tricked out his Segway a little more and rode it to the leather pants store. Frank Robinson probably slept in. Mike Bascik probably watched a video of him giving up 756 to Barry Bonds. Why are they celebrating? Chris Needham is shutting down Capitol Punishment, one of the longest-running and the best Nats blog. Between this and Barry Svrluga moving to the Redskins beat (hopefully just a formality before getting a columnist position) coverage of the Nats is taking a hit.

While I appreciate Needham's 3.5 years, I can't help but think he's letting all those guys off the hook. At least he is doing it on his own terms and not because he fell off a concourse on Opening Night 2005 like the Nationals Pastime guy.*

*Just a theory, it did happen to someone that night though.

Flyers vs. Pens: Hockey blogger looking for correspondent

A noted hockey blogger I know may be looking for a correspondent to collect video, photos and observations of the Happy Valley scene during the Flyers vs. Pengyunz series. Apparently, it was quite something the last time these two teams met in the playoffs; I had already graduated, so I missed it. Actually, I may not have missed it. I do remember what the town was like when the Eagles and Steelers met in the regular season a few years ago though and that was pretty intense. Drop me a line (e-mail link below) if you are interested.

As for the series, I won't be watching it, but I hope that Pittsburgh loses.

How can you root for the Flyers? Just shameful.

In all seriousness, when is finals week in Happy Valley? The series doesn't start till Friday, so the semester outta be winding down before the Pens knock the Flyers out.

MSM vs. blogs - William World News - William F. Yurasko's blog

MSM vs. blogs

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been a lot of discussion about blogs and the mainstream media. I figured I would add my perspective as someone who knows both worlds.

Blah blah blah, Christmas Ape. Blah blah blah badmouthing employer. Blah blah blah duh. Blah blah blah overreaction by employer. Blah blah blah Buzz Bissenger. Blah blah blah paranoia. Blah blah blah vitriol. Blah blah blah Deadspin. Blah blah blah Will Leitch. Blah blah blah Mark Cuban.

In conclusion, blah.

Caps beat Devils; bloggers raise $ for Wilson High hockey

Last night our Nation's Capitals shutout Martin Brodeur (pictured above) and his NJ Devils 4-0. Even Donald Brashear scored! Not a bad debut for G Cristobal Huet. The teams split the season series 2-2.

We watched it with Caps bloggers and fans at Clyde's Gallery Place as part of a fundraiser for Woodrow Wilson High's hockey team organized by On Frozen Blog, Off Wing Opinion, Japers Rink, The Peerless Prognosticator, Capital Addiction, and 3 Grumpy Caps Fans. Wilson is the only public high school in the District with a hockey team and has struggled to remain solvent following the death of its trailblazing coach, Paul McKenzie. A tale of two newsrooms - William World News - William F. Yurasko's blog

A tale of two newsrooms

One Mission, Two Newsrooms - CityPaper
A river runs through the struggle for the future of the Washington Post.
The Post and washingtonpost.com are two separate newsrooms, separated by over three miles, five Metro stops, the Potomac River and a state line. Not surprisingly, the two cultures sometimes have trouble working together and yet, washingtonpost.com is one of the best five newspaper Web sites in the country. When you consider that in many ways, washingtonpost.com is still Web 1.0, that is even more impressive. Integration between the two, while seemingly an obvious decision, is likely being held back because of the Washington Post Co.'s preference for Web employees that are not part of the newspaper guild. Virginia, a "right-to-work" state, provides that option, while The District does not.

And we're back! - William World News - William F. Yurasko's blog

And we're back!

Had a little problem with the yurasko.net Web host yesterday. After that was resolved, BloggerTM would not recognize my new FTP password. This morning it is, so back to regularly scheduled programming. I'll try to get Blue White Roundtable up over the lunch time hour. The two posts I tried to publish yesterday morning are there with their original time-stamp too, be sure to read them.

maroonandblack.blogspot.com still available

New Redskins head coach Jim Zorn got off to an inauspicious start (DC Sports Bog) when he mentioned that Redskins colors were "maroon, black and yellow." I immediately thought that Maroon and Black would be a great name for a new Redskins blog, so I checked to see if it was available.

I am almost disappointed to see that it is still around. Somebody step up to the plate or more appropriately, behind center.

Also, lost in all the Zorn coverage is his tendency to run fake field goals when he was the Seahawks holder and the NFL Super Pro Club booklet that he was in.

Suggested sports blogs names and topics, many of them obvious

In the tradition of withleather (possibly NSFW, depending on where you work), the band is out on the field and a bunch of other blogs named after infamous quotes, actions, etc. here are some suggested names for sports blogs.

makeitrain - athletes and strip clubs, what could go right?

icantdownloadajarofpeanutbutter - Joe Paterno doesn't use the internet, but his fans do.

ivegotafamilytofeed -- overpaid NBA stars

misterirregardless -- this what Saved by the Blog should have been called before Mottram the younger joined Mottram the elder

playedlikedidleypoo, weletthemoffthehook -- coaches losing their cool in postgame interviews

thebearsarewhowethoughtheyare -- great for an NFC North blog

rickeyknewaplayerwhoworeabattinghelmet -- athletes who talk about themselves in the third person

haveanotherdonutyoufatpig -- I can't believe there isn't a hockey blog named after this great Jim Shonefeld line

givinghimthebusiness -- Football officiating

blesshishearthemustbethesickestmaninamerica -- when horrible things happen to good players

whatsgoingonwithbritney -- a look at sports non sequitors or "Mike Patrick's slow descent into madness is no longer so slow"

icanhaspittsburgher -- black and gold sports

hicksdigthelongball -- Hillbillies Sons of the soil talking about home runs. I suppose there could be a dcsportshick too.

Go ahead and start one of these up, just be sure to link back to where you got the original idea.

I found the fix for the "Gmail crashes Firefox" problem

A quick Google search for "Gmail crashing Firefox" took care of problems I have been having lately. I found this page with this helpful information:
For me... I disabled the HTML Validator plugin for "mail.google.com".
Simple enough! Three days later and Gmail hasn't crashed Firefox again.

Of course, I prefer this not happen at all, but at least it can be easily fixed.

SEO tweaks/cheats - William World News - William F. Yurasko's blog

SEO tweaks/cheats

I'm playing with my BloggerTM template to see if I can improve the search engine optimization. BloggerTM is not nearly as robust for people who FTP their content to their own domains as it is for people using blogspotTM. I'm trying to overcome that by moving my title and META=keywords tags out of the head and into the body of the document after the Blogger tag. This isn't an according-to-Hoyle-way to layout HTML, but if I can provide this blog with better SEO, I can live with bending a few rules.

So far, this appears to put the title of the post in the title field which was my intention. The downside is the title of the most recent post will be added to the title on the main page, but I can live with that happening.

If any of the 6% of Macs users or 1% of Linux users who visit could verify that the site looks fine in their browsers, I'd appreciate it. I have tested it with Firefox and IE on my Wintel machine and it seems to work. If I don't encounter any problems and Google and Yahoo index the site properly, I'll describe in detail what I did to make it happen.

<i>Collegian</i> Web site redesigned again - William World News - William F. Yurasko's blog

Collegian Web site redesigned again

The Web site for Penn State's student newspaper, The Daily Collegian, has improved upon a redesign that began in 2006 and was fully implemented in July. Drop down menus and an eyepiece with rotating images/stories have brough the Collegian up to speed. It is a little blocky though and I still don't like the serif text. Overall, it is pretty good though -- the CDT could learn a lot from this new design. By the way, I have been meaning to talk about the CDT, Inky/Philly Daily News and Post-Gazette redesigns for a while.

Also, the domain is now www.psucollegian.com. The original address, collegian.psu.edu will still work, but redirects to the new domain.

Social bookmarking tweaks

A few weeks ago, it became apparent that some of the features I have added to the site Add This and Feedbutton were really slowing down the load time.

Add This! has been replaced by direct links to several popular bookmarking sites. If you use BloggerTM and want to do the same, visit explodingboy.

Feedbutton was replaced with links to a few popular RSS aggregators.

Thanks to all those who let me know about the problems.
