Nats ballpark (yawn) - William World News

Nats ballpark (yawn)

I have not been paying very much attention to the continuing saga of the Nats ballpark this week, it is getting very old and not much is really happening or will be for sometime. Anyhow, here are a few articles from the past few days:

D.C. Metro Fund Weighed To Boost Navy Yard Stop
Land Sale Possible To Fund Stadium
City official: Lease still weeks away

There may not be a vote until February. Ugh.

Oh yeah, the Nats picked up a pitcher (ESPN.com), Ramon Ortiz too.

Powell on "This Week" talks Nats

Powell Gives Thoughts On Stadium Deal - WRC-TV
Former Secretary Of State Colin Powell was on This Week with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday. The two talked about a bunch of unimportant things for a while and then the topic of the Nats came up. The transcript follows:

Buying the Nationals?

Stephanopoulos: You mentioned Washington, D.C. You want to be owner of the Washington, D.C., baseball team, the Nationals.

Powell: Well, I'm on a club that is trying to purchase the Washington Nationals from Major League Baseball, yes.

Stephanopoulos: Think you're going to get it?

Powell: I certainly hope so. The first thing we have to get is the stadium issue resolved. And the city council has now put that off until early next year.

And I hope the city council will find a way to support the stadium deal. That will work itself out one way or the other. And I think, after that, Major League Baseball will announce who they wish to see own the team.

And I'm fairly confident in the group I'm with, led by Fred Malek, a longtime Washington resident. And there are a lot of us on that club who have roots in this community.

And I think we can do, perhaps, a better job than any other group to represent the interests of the community and to make sure that the Washington Nationals reach out to the community, bring baseball back into the inner city, get more young African-American kids and other minority kids interested in baseball.

Stephanopoulos: Frank Robinson talked about that all the time.

Powell: Yes. And we can can do it. I think our club is perhaps better positioned for doing that.

But, George, you're giving me a golden opportunity to talk about my club and my company, but there are seven other competitors as well. They're not as good as us, of course.

Stephanopoulos: Well, it sounds like you think you're going to get it, then.

Nats: while we were out

In D.C. Drama Over Baseball, It's Hard to Tell Who's on First - The Post
Remember that gigantic sucking sound last week? It was the leadership vacuum in the District and whenever there is a giant sucking sound in D.C. you know that Marion Barry (file photo) is not far behind.

Oh and just a reminder, Carol Schwartz (R, at-large) wanted everyone to know that she had nothing to do with Barry's plan.
Nats Bring Back Stanton, Look to Add Starters - The Post
Reliever Mike Stanton, who was traded for a couple of BoSox minor leaguers the last week of the season has resigned with the Nationals. That might have been the best trade Jim Bowden made all year.

More from The Wash. Times: Nationals bring back Stanton

Trading him to the Red Sox for about 20 minutes was a fantastic trade. But the only good thing about this signing is the potential to trade him again before the trading deadline this year. Sigh. He's pitched for, what, 18 years in the majors?

MLB is being dumb and greedy again - William World News

MLB is being dumb and greedy again

Nats Bidders Told Not to Offer Funds - The Post
After two prospective groups (Ledecky and Haney) tried to assure D.C. that they would pay for cost overruns, MLB e-mailed the prospective groups with instructions to refrain from offering to pitch in.

So, when it comes down to it the District wants Nats owners to take over cost overruns, some prospective owners are willing to agree, and well, fans just want to know that their ball team is going to be around. Can there be any wonder why Bud Selig's MLB bio comes up in Google when you type "national disgrace?" Back down Bud, the prospective owners know what a good deal it is for them even if they have to spend money for overruns.
Nationals getting a raw deal - MSNBC
Some national attention on the Nats plight. My question is where are all of those national columnists who wrote so lovingly of the Nats (Charles Krauthammer, David Brooks, I am looking at you) during the season now? We need you guys smack MLB upside the head in print that the nation reads.
Ballpark impasse affects projects - The Wash. Times
The delays don't just bug Nats fans. Without the ballpark, the community benefit fund created under the stadium legislation is in jeopardy. The fund includes up to $125 million for school construction and modernization, $45 million for improving public libraries, $10 million for plans to build a new hospital and $2 million for supplies at McKinley Technology High School in Northeast.

C'mon Selig, think of the children, won't you please think of the children?!

Wasn't this thing suppossed to have been settled last Dec. 21

Barry Acted to Block Stadium - The Post
Marion Barry (D, Ward-8) is making his presence known again and no good can come from that, can it? This article details how he tried to create a deal with prospective owner Jonathan Ledecky on cost overruns. Barry was rallying support on the council for this move, but one of Mayor Anthony Williams aides tipped off MLB, who of course were not in favor Barry's plan to "dictate terms." It would all be so facinating if I did not have a horse in this race. Oh and Linda Cropp is pushing the RFK site again, which would be pennywise and pound-foolish.

Someone is going to get a great book out of this ordeal.

More from The Wall Street Journal: Nationals Pass Time Waiting for a Deal To Build a Ballpark & Baseball blues
Stadium Arbitration Could Take Months - The Post
If MLB does take D.C. to arbitration it would not be settled easily. I have heard that MLB has the upper hand if it goes that far, but I have also heard the inverse. Let's hope something gets worked out before it reaches that point. MLB has really overplayed their hand.

D.C. stadium vote delayed until next year - The Wash. Times
There is no chance that the council will vote on the lease before the Dec. 31 deadline.
THOMAS BOSWELL - Baseball, D.C. Are in a League Of Their Own - The Post
Boswell calls the plight of D.C. and MLB poetic justice (which is pretty much is) while suggesting that they both back down and reach a compromise. If it only it were that easy.

Yuda's Gameday has my feelings on that matter summed up pefectly.

I have to say that I do feel sorry for you Nats fans. You've been used like cheap socks by MLB, and this whole stadium issue (if I were a Nats fan) would probably be driving me crazy. How do you folks cope? As an unbiased observer, I just want the whole issue dealt with and the Nats to get a fair shake.

In Bud Selig's defense, he did own the Brewers. Oh, wait, they still suck. Nevermind.

Nothing says incompetent like poor managment. Can we start a popular revolt against MLB? Seriously?

This is what happens when you take on the responsibility of a franchise yourself instead of letting more qualified people do it. Then again, like I said, Selig did own the Brewers at one point.

Frank is coming back; Rally on monday

Robinson to Return As Nationals Manager - The Post
Frank Robinson signed a one-year contract to stay on as Nats manager.
The decision, though, was agonizing for both sides, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Some high-ranking Nationals front-office members occasionally became frustrated with Robinson's strategic maneuvers.
Pitching coach Randy St. Claire and bench coach Eddie Rodriguez stick around; hitting coach Tom McCraw, first base coach Don Buford, third base coach Dave Huppert, bullpen coach Bob Natal and roving instructor Jack Voigt will not.

I like Robinson as a man and a competitor, but he cannot handle pitchers and makes dubious gameday decisions. Hopefully, he will improve this year, because to get to 81 wins again, he is going have to get better.

MLB: DON'T BUILD AT RFK

Baseball Opposes Moving Stadium - The Post
MLB sent a letter to Linda Cropp telling her and the council that they are not on board with building the new ballpark at RFK. It would might be cheaper for the District, but would have less of an economic upside. I agree with MLB, but their arrogance is not helping anything; but then again, when has it?

Yesterday was also a busy day for the council as they talked about the ballpark. MissChatter followed the deliberations throughout the day at Just A Nats Fan.

More from The Wash. Times: MLB rules out site near RFK for ballpark
For New Nat Soriano, A Question of Position -
The Alfonso Soriano trade is officially complete. Since he was traded to the Nats for Brad Wilkerson and others, he has announced that he is not interested in playing left field. He also can't pitch, which is what the Nats really need.

While Wilkerson had kind of a tough year in 2005, he played wherever he was needed, including all outfield positions and first base. He took a lot of pitches too. I think he can also pitch, though he has not since either college or high school. Oh, and he was $5 million cheaper than Soriano. Plus, he was "The Last Expo" and the first National to get a hit. When it comes down to it, Brad played hardball. I do not think Chevy Chase Bank is jumping up and down to make a Soriano commerical either, do you?

Gee, thanks Jim Bowden, too bad Boston did not want you. Who can blame them when you trade a steady team player because he did not get along with the volatile journeyman that is Jose Guillen. You know, the guy who has burnt his bridges to the clubhouses of every team he had played for previously. Duh!

More from The Wash. Times - Soriano, Nats get chance to talk
T(H)OM LOVERRO - MLB needs to threaten council - The Wash. Times
Not content with the anti-RFK letter from MLB, Loverro wants MLB to bully the council more. Um, my read of the council is that this is exactly the wrong thing to do.

Labels:

posted by WFY @ 5:59 AM | |

Ah, so now we have it. Wilk (supposedly) didn't get along with Guillen. Solution: dump Wilk. Glad to know who's running the team!

Incidentally, I'm not buying it. Guillen seems urgently to need to atone for his past missteps, and he's done a good job of it in a Nats uniform. If there was incurable bad blood between him and Wilkerson, it sure didn't show on the field.

No, this deal is All About Bowden. Until the Nats get an owner, we can expect more of this kind of wreckage, so hang on to your socks, kids.

ON THE NATS...

Nobody seems happy about the Wilkerson-Soriano trade. I am not really sure how this helps the Nats, but then again, Jim Bowden is still GM.

I am happy for Wilkerson, who probably gets a better chance of playing to his abilities with Texas, but I am sad to see him go. He got kind of a raw deal from the Nats and hopefully he can get better treatment in "some-jerk town whose only boast is being equidistant between Dallas and Fort Worth" than he did from the Nats.

I know that generally speaking, local ownership is not that important to making the Nats successful, but I have to think that had MLB named the Malek or Lerner groups owners a long time ago, they might have done something like what D.C. United is doing in SE (The Post) in anticipation of building a stadium there.

MLB AGREES TO THE LEASE!

District, Baseball Agree on Nationals' Lease - The Post
I about stopped in my tracks when I saw this, but MLB Commish Bud Selig has officially given the green light on the Anacostia ballpark lease. It now heads back to the DC Council where they must get 7 votes to approve the lease. Yes, boys and girls--we may now relive the pins and needles we felt last December. Early indications seem to favor a positive outcome, but the anti-baseball people want an outside consultant to review the lease. Won't they ever stop???!!! One thing works in our favor, though: for the councilmembers who are on the fence, they're fully aware of the fact that, if they vote against the lease, they'll be remembered as the councilmembers who ended baseball in DC--and they don't want that.

PLAYER SHUFFLE

Bowden Heats Up the Stove - The Post
DC baseball champion Tom Boswell analyzes the overall moves made by Jim Bowden this year, but does make a frightening point right up front--with no owner and a ballpark deal gone completely awry, Jim Bowden is the best thing the Nats have right now, for better or worse. That's kind of a bleak assessment, yes?

Soriano Jockeys for Position- The Post
The age-old question, varied for the Nats: now that they have Soriano, what do they do with him? Second base is covered by Jose Vidro, and I've already heard one report that will put Soriano in the outfield.

More from The Wash. Times: The Soriano questions

Wilkerson Shocked, but Calls Rangers a 'Positive Situation' - The Post
I have to admit, I have mixed feelings about Brad Wilkerson being traded away. It's hard to let go of his achievements in the inaugural season, most notably the Nats' first cycle. (And who can forget those Chevy Chase bank commercials?)

I would like to go on record that this bowl matchup sucks. It's a lose-lose, where if we win then so what. If we lose, uggh... Plus even if we win, we could still get jumped in the polls by Ohio State if the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame.

Couldn't agree more. Penn State gains nothing from this matchup. But I don't think Ohio State...we beat them, so there's no justification for them going ahead of us if we lose. But I do see a scenario where stay at #3 behind the USC-Texas loser.

THE MESSAGE TO MLB IS...BUILD A NICE BALLPARK

Mayor Dismisses Stadium Estimate - The Post
Mayor Tony Williams categorically says "NO!" to the notion of a $700+ million ballpark, insisting that no more than the agreed-upon $535 million will be spent, and that the higher estimates are coming from the anti-baseball people.

Stadium Choices Are Threefold - The Post
DC baseball champion Tom Boswell chimes in to advocate for the Anacostia site, saying that compromising and putting it at RFK is a waste, which I totally agree with. He summed it up very well, I thought: "Do it right or don't do it at all."

I had to laugh, though, when Tony Kornheiser (whom I take even less seriously than Dave Jones) weighed in on the subject, saying he wanted a "Bentley" of a stadium for this kind of money, not a Ford, Buick, or '76 Chevy Nova.

Council fails to cap ballpark costs - The Times
Anti-baseball chief David Catania's "emergency legislation" to cap the costs of the ballpark. Though much of the council voted in favor of the legislation, it failed to pass by one vote (it needed a total of 9 in order to pass). Am I the only one who's so tired of David Catania trying his hardest to scuttle the whole deal?

Nats eye starting pitchers - The Times
Now that A.J. Burnett has gone to the Blue Jays, the Nats look elsewhere for pitching muscle. Understandly, he was turned off by the Nats' lack of ownership and general front-office and ballpark chaos.

AND THE COSTS JUST KEEP ON A-RISIN'

D.C. Baseball Stadium Cost Could Exceed $700 Million - The Post
I'd say this is just a tad more than they had originally thought, but takes into account parking, Metro, and road improvements around the SE site. While Natwar Gandhi says that the numbers are by no means final, and while Jack Evans says that the $535 million agreed to last year is what they're sticking to, I can still hear the anti-baseball council members just licking their lips right now, which might be why Mr. Anti-Baseball himself, David Catania, is chiming in with "emergency legislation".

Local Leaders Weigh In on Baseball's Future in D.C. - WTOP News
This article's a few days old, but it's sort of a "he said/she said" on the ballpark options between Tony Williams and Linda Cropp. (Though I hate how they introduce the article as now fearing we'll lose the team.)

Nats making pitch for Burnett - The Times
The Nats move ahead in trying to acquire new muscle, despite no owner and no stadium deal yet. I'm actually surprised that Jim Bowden is making such moves, being that he's making no secret about applying for GM jobs elsewhere.

FLORIDA-BOUND

Lions' fans rush to make travel plans for Miami - The Patriot-News
Penn State fans are already heading south for the winter. One of these days I'll get to a bowl game--or even an away game, for the matter.

Frankly, PSU wanted more - The Patriot-News
I generally don't take Dave Jones too seriously, as he's always been something of a Penn State kill-joy. To be perfectly frank myself, I'm pleased with FSU as our bowl opponent. I can't stand that stupid-sounding tomahawk chop (it sounds even worse in an Atlanta Braves ballpark), and if JoePa can get one more win over Bobby Bowden's record, then I'm all for this matchup.

CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM?

Tentative Deal Reached On Lease For Stadium - The Post
After hearing politics and worst-case scenarios and generally being whipsawwed into thinking we'd never actually have an Anacostia ballpark, it would appear that MLB and the DC Council reached a compromise on the Nationals' new ballpark! I'm still kinda pinching myself to believe it. In essense (and without a lot of details disclosed), MLB agreed to the letter of credit and the $20 million, and the DC Council compromised on another issue. What that issue was, we don't know, but with all the hardball played in recent days, I'm kind of eager to know what transpired and what the terms of the "compromise" are. Nevertheless, I'm allowing myself to feel cautiously optimistic.

Baseball Assured D.C. Site Won't Change - WTOP News

The big news of the day is that Jerry Reinsdorf and members of the DC Council got to meet yesterday to spar over the details of who dishes out the money for cost overruns in Southeast. As was expected, MLB played lots of hardball.

Why? Because they can.

And if I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd say that MLB is giving DC the shaft as payback for the steroid scandal and Congressional hearings this year. But then again, I'm not a conspiracy theorist--normally. But what it DOES entail is a lot of big egos (MLB) and political (read "mayoral") ambitions (various council members) clouding what would otherwise be in the best interests of Washington and local baseball.

But one thing that for sure came out of this meeting was the possibility that RFK be strongly considered as the alternate site to Anacostia, and unfortunately there's growing support from the DC Countil to move the stadium there. And apparently MLB is switching gears to say, "We never officially objected to RFK!" (That's not a direct quote per se, but a paraphrase of what they're getting at.) What Jerry Reinsdorf IS quoted as saying is that MLB might consider the RFK site if point-man Tony Williams asks for it.

I don't know about everyone else, but I don't really have the stomach to see this whole mess go to arbitration, where I have no doubts that MLB would win, and I'm sick to death of their monopolist egos ruining our Nationals. I swear, so far the only thing Bud Selig has done right with the Nationals is moving them to Washington! Everything else has either been a back-stabbing betrayal (TV deal), glad-handling croneyisn (Jeff Smulyan as a possible owner), and delays delays delays (no owner yet). Granted, the DC Council is no better half the time. I swear, I think David Catania will be happy ONLY if the Nats pack up, pick up, and leave town.

My own personall assessment over the stadium: if we're going to have a stadium in Southeast (my preferred location), it's going to be VERY close. Right now, I'd say it's an even 50/50 for where the ballpark will be.

A couple Beano quotes:

This season has plenty of people giving thanks. We give thanks with them, for them and about them. To name a few:

Penn State fans. They're grateful Joe Paterno acted like he was deaf and never listened to or heard all the complaints and suggestions that he should have retired by now. They're also grateful that Joe is blind, so he hasn't seen all the "for sale" signs on his lawn.

For Michael Robinson, who showed more patience during Penn State's losing seasons than anyone who was not a four-eyed putz.

TRAVESTY!

Being a Nationals fan can be tough at times. We were largely deprived of watching our local nine on television and when we could, we had to listen to Ron Darling. We also heard nothing about the Nats on the so-called "sports radio" station and the official Nats station had a terrible signal. Throw in a lack of ownership, poor concession service at RFKave and of course, Peter Angelo$, and we are the one-eyed, club-footed stepchild of MLB fans.

The offseason has been no better, even worse in many regards with the ballpark lease in doubt, MLB still keeping us from getting an owner, etc. However, the greatest indignity did not come from the National Disgrace that is Bud Selig or the politics of Linda Cropp. No, this indignity came from an unlikely source, one that even championed the very person that has been slighted, back in spring training.

I'm talking about Washingtonian magazine.

Now I like Washingtonian, I even subscribe to it. It has a few good articles each month along with a good list of coming events in a handy dead-tree format. It is nice reminder that "Washington" is not just about self-loathing hipsters who have only lived here for a few years and is not limited to a few trendy/gentrified neighborhoods.

The December issue, which recently arrived in my mailbox, has a list of the "50 Best & Most Influential Journalists" and a shockingly,

BARRY SVRLUGA IS NOT ON IT

. Really, they overlooked him; completely dropped the ball like Preston Wilson in centerfield.

This troubles me greatly. Svrluga firmly established himself as "The Man" this season. His excellent writing, sharp wit, charming live discussions, and yes even his fondness for Panera made the return of D.C. baseball that much sweeter. To ignore his contributions is downright irresponsible on the part of Washingtonian. Did Jorge Arangure Jr. somehow get a vote? Many letters to the editor need to question the collective wisdom of Washingtonian and praise of St. Barry.

From Washingtonian before it lost it's way.

It was not always this way. Barry used to be the golden boy of Post Watch, getting a nice article prior to the season. Why? Why? Why -- Washingtonian would you deny this man's greatness?

"BITTER DAY FOR BASEBALL IN THE DISTRICT"

D.C.'s Stadium Lease Talks Stumble - The Post
Yesterday's committee hearing did not go terribly well for fans of a Anacostia waterfront ballpark. MLB has not agreed to pay $20 million towards the ballpark, though a couple of news reports indicated that they had. MLB President Robert DuPuy is threatening to take D.C. to abritration over the lease if it is not completed by Dec. 31. Thomas Boswell is angry that this kind of nonsense is keeping the Nationals from being players in the free agent market (more later). I am mad because MLB is being incredibly greedy for over nickles and dimes, but what should I expect when commisioner Bud Selig is a National Disgrace.
District near a financial agreement with MLB - The Wash. Times
Nothing I read in this article made me think they were closer to an agreement, they still think that MLB is giving financial concessions. That remidns me, whatever happened to Eric Fisher? I do not see his byline anymore.
Nats Lose Loaiza To the Athletics - The Post
P Esteban Loaiza, who had a better than expected 2005 season will be wearing green and gold next year. The Nats really had no chance of keeping him with the ownership situation in flux. The Nats know have two proven starters returning from last year's squad.

More from The Wash. Times: Nats lose starter Loaiza to A's
JIM WILLIAMS - ON MEDIA: 'Big Show' returns … sort of - The Wash. Examiner
Scroll past all the Dan Patrick/Keith Olberman (that's so 1995) stuff to find out potential Nats radio arrangements. Of course, take it all with a grain of salt, since Jim Williams wrote the column.
A co-worker of mine who had season tickets last year got his invoice yesterday. Given the current situation, he is not sure he wants to get season tickets again.

BALLPARK LAND TAKEOVER DELAYED

Stadium Property Takeover Delayed - The Post
The District is now letting landowners in the ballpark footprint stick around until February instead of Dec. 31.
Officials: Ballpark cap must not rise - The Wash. Times
Retro style ballpark fans rejoice! CFO Natwar Ghandi has told the council that in order to keep the city's credit rating, they cannot spend any more on the ballpark than the $535 million already set aside. This will likely help Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) in his quest to have a more traditional design for the ballpark than the current steel, glass and limestone design. On Monday, there will joint hearing by the committees on Finance and Revenue and Economic Development which will probably be quite contentious.

Guillen has successful shoulder surgery - nationals.com
RF Jose Guillen's shoulder surgery lasted 2 1/2 hours instead of 30 minutes, but was successful.
In retrospect, Guillen said he should have taken time off during the season in order to allow the shoulder to heal.

"I cannot be playing like this anymore, because it really cost me a lot. I was playing in a lot of pain during the second half. I have to be smart enough next time. I have to look out for my future and my career," Guillen said. "There was no way I could shut it down [in the second half], because we were fighting for a playoff spot. Jose Guillen is all about winning, not about anything else."
So, is anyone going to apologize to Ryan Church for sitting out his injury?

Speaking of Guillen, Capital Punishment has a look at all the home runs that RFK cost Nats players last season. Guillen apparently lost 9 homers to RFK's extreme dimensions. I want to know how many homers visiting teams lost last season.

Also, A.J. Burnett's agent told Jim Bowden that Washington "will be somewhere near the top of the list of teams" for which he is interested in. Burnett's wife is from Bowie. Also, don't expect Bowden or anyone else to get the Red Sox GM job until after the turkey is finished. (Boston Herald)

Notes: Nats unveil new alternate jersey - nationals.com
The ever-resilient MLB did not let lease negotiations get in the way of unveiling more merchandise. The new alternate jersey is red with the interlocking DC in white on the left and a blue number on the right. They also switiched to a blue batting jersey. Maybe, IF the Nats ever get an owner, I will get the blue batting jersey, but not until then. Spending money on this team right now does not make sense since MLB has ignored our good faith over the last year. That reminds me, Bud Selig is a National Disgrace.

Chris Creamer's excellent sportslogos.net has more on the alternate and batting jerseys.

NATS GET ANOTHER IF

Nationals Sign M. Anderson
- The Post
Bad news for folk hero Jamey Carroll, GM Jim Bowden signed IF Marlon Anderson for 2 years (!) yesterday. Anderson was a great pinch hitter last year, leading the league in batting average off the bench.

I want to create a new rule for the Nats. As long as Cristian Guzman draws a paycheck, so should Carroll. The latter plays with and beyond his ability every time he is one the diamond. His .251 BA this season had more to do with sheer will than talent. I want him on my team. BALLPARK DESIGN BEING REVIEWED; LERNERS ADDING KASTEN?; BURNETT

Stadium's Modern Design Is Clear Winner on Council - The Post
Some in the D.C. government love the design, but Jack Williams (D-Ward 2) thinks it looks like an office building. Ouch. We of course cannot make up our own mind yet because the designs have not been unveiled publicly. You can bet that The Wash. Examiner will want to know how many bathrooms are in the design.

RHP Josh A.J. Burnett is highly coveted, despite his 49-50 career record and getting kicked off the Marlins at the end of last season. Why don't you ask the coaching staff if the delays are a problem, Bobby?
Williams Joins Talks With Baseball Officials - The Post
I missed this one yesterday; Mayor Tony Williams poked his head into the meetings between Jerry Reinsdorf and the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission on Tuesday. He then left for a "business trip" to Atlantic City. I like Mayor Williams and respect that he saved the D.C., but he spends an awful lot of time on the road. He is like Marion Barry in a snow storm -- out of town.

One more potential monkey wrench is revealed at the end of the article. David A. Catania (I-At Large) is trying to force a vote on the lease in the council. It never ends!

NATS LEASE NEGOCIATIONS BEGIN ANEW

D.C. to Seek More Money From Baseball Officials - The Post
The District is going to ask for $44 million from MLB to cover two things: 1) Letter of credit to guarantee interest payments on stadium construction bonds in case of cancelled games due to things like a players strike, terrorism, weather, etc. 2) VIP parking. MLB is obviously not pleased. Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) is adament that the ballpark will cost no more than $535 million because that is all the credit that they can get from Wall Street. In the end, MLB is worried about pennies on the dollar and elicit no sympathy from me.

MLB ON PLOTKIN AT 10 A.M.; BOSWELL ON SELIG

Stadium Deal to Slow Sale of Nats - WTOP
WTOP's Political Analyst Mark Plotkin says the lease is really "the first and last step" in the process.

"All the controversy over which owner is really moot until they get the deal done."
Big surprise, right?

MLB relocation committee chairman Jerry Reinsdorf will be on Plotkin's politcs program at 10 a.m. today. You can listen live here. I hope that Frank Robinson makes a guest apperance, PMOF around his neck and presents his "point of view" to Reinsdorf.

UPDATE: D.C. Councilman Jack Evans went on WTOP today to clarify the District's position on ballpark lease negotiations.
D.C. needs a guarantee that baseball will pay the $6 million a year lease on the stadium, and time is running out, Evans said.

"What I have told them is: This is non-negotiable. So you either agree to this, or you move the team to somewhere else because we're wasting our time," he said.

Evans said the lease could be agreed upon "tomorrow" if baseball could only agree to the rent payment.

"If you have to guarantee us a $6 million a year guarantee, then do it. I mean, enough is enough."

Without baseball's guarantee of rent payment, D.C. will lose its investment-grade bond rating on Wall Street.

"It's not me being the hard negotiator. I am boxed in by Wall Street," Evans said. "Wall Street has said to us...that under no circumstances will they give us this investment-grade rating without this guarantee."

NATS NEWS WHILE I WAS AWAY

I am still recovering for a big football weekend (more soon) so I am behind on my Nationals coverage.

On Saturday, The Post finished off their series on potential Nats owners with profiles of the Franklin L. Haney Sr and Albert L. Lord groups.

Saturday also saw Thom Loverro's of The Wash. Times disappointment that Pat Gillick became the general manager of the Phillies in November 2005 when he could have been the Nats GM in November 2004.

Lastly, today's USA Today features opinion from Tom Krattenmaker on proselytizing in pro sports, including Baseball Chapel, which came under fire after remarks by Ryan Church late in the season. His conclusion -- let them stay, just bring in other faiths. Amen.

BOWDEN MAKES GOOD TRADE; LERNERS PROFILED

Castilla Dealt For a Pitcher - The Post
GM Jim Bowden made a good trade, shipping 3B Vinny Castilla off to San Diego for mediocre pitcher, Brian Lawrence who was 7-15 with a 4.83 ERA in 33 starts last season. Not great, but that is a lot of work and after September, just having a guy who can make 33 starts sounds pretty special. Also, the trade is a wash financially since they have similar salaries. Perhaps the biggest upside -- Dutch Zimmerman is the everyday third baseman.

More from The Wash. Times: Nats trade Castilla for starting pitcher
Family Business Looks to Expand - The Post
The Lerner bid profiled. They are a family of real estate moguls. Gary Abramson, whose family shares a suite at FedEx Field with the Lerners, has this to say about them:
(They) don't think like a corporation. They think like a family. They have pride of ownership in terms of the projects. They visit them personally, know the tenants, visit the employees. They would bring a family, hands-on pride to the team.
There are concerns that they have done enough to create local support though:
But others privately express concern that Lerner's group does not have the broad political and business support from the Washington community enjoyed by some other groups. And some in the business community said the Lerners haven't worked hard enough at solidifying local backing.
Mayor Anthony Williams said that they are "the real sleeper in this."

SMULYAN REALLY WANTS THE NATS

The Outsider Positions to Get Back In - The Post
Indianapolis businessman Jeffrey Smulyan is profiled, focusing mostly on his tenure as owner of the Seattle Mariners. He threatened to move the M's to the Tampa Bay area, but that may have just been leverage to get a new stadium and was a tactic used by next ownership group (it worked). The article also indicates that Smulyan was ahead of his time with player introductions, flashy scoreboards and more.

Also, a number of people speculated that his pursuit of the Nats was really just an attempt to buy the Reds. It turns out that is a moot point, as the Reds were sold yesterday (The Cincinnati Enqurier).

The real problem with Smulyan is not that he would try to move the team, but that he is undercaptialized (the bid relies on funding from Emmis Broadcasting, which Smulyan is CEO of) and was not a good owner in Seattle.
MLB, District close to lease - The Wash. Times
Jerry Reinsdorf and other with MLB are going to be having face to face talks wtih the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission and other city officials over the lease for the proposed ballpark today. The article seems confident that it will get done soon.

Also, Marion Barry (D, Ward 8) is on board with plans to build a soccer stadium across the Anacostia River from the ballpark. The D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission is also planning on renovating the armory for indoor lacrosse and NBDL.

SCALING BACK THE BALLPARK

Some Stadium Features May Be Cut - The Post
With rising construction costs (Hurricane Katrina is apparently a culprit), the council is looking at scaling back some parts of the ballpark (retail and underground parking garage) to stay within the projected cost. D.C. Council Chairwoman Linda Cropp's description:
"There would be overruns if it were a Cadillac stadium. They may no longer do a Cadillac, but they may do a Buick or Ford."
To which David Catania (I-At Large) added:
If we want a Buick, we have one -- it's called RFK.
That is a logical argument except for the fact that RFK is not a Buick, it is a '76 Nova. I guess Catania does not know Buicks like I do.

While I understand that cutting some features may have to happen, I have to wonder if eliminating an underground parking garage is pennywise and pound foolish. Hopefully, the ballpark design will be flexible enough to allow for the removed features to be added later. Also, since the ballpark cannot be built until March at the earliest anyway, are those Katrina construction cost spikes still going to be high?

Also, those technical amendments for financing legislation that came up a few weeks ago were passed 10-2 with usual suspects Catania and Adrian Fenty( D-Ward 4) voting no. Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) was absent, again.

I just clicked over to your site after reading your comment on DCist, and was excited to see the Stone Harbor water tower! I spent my summers here growing up, my family's been going since the 'teens. I always get excited to see people in this area who know Stone Harbor, outside of Philly it seems relatively unknown.

ALL SORTS OF NATS NEWS TODAY

Cropp: Financing agreement fixed - The Wash. Times
D.C. Council chairwoman Linda Cropp is indicating that everything is on course for having bonds sold for the ballpark by the December 31 deadline. Meanwhile, Vincent Orange (D-Ward 5) is not happy that his Government Operations Committee is getting shut out on "baseball issues" by Cropp and sued the chairwoman (The Post).
MLB seeking to merge bidders - The Wash. Times
It looks like Bud Selig wants to merge some of the bidders, like he did with the Red Sox sale a few years ago. In other words, he is going to put Stan Kasten into one of the other groups, likely, the one that wins.

4 NATS FILE FOR FREE AGENCY; MANN: SMULYAN WON'T MOVE TEAM

Four More Nationals Elect to Become Free Agents - The Post
Four free agents filed yesterday: P Esteban Loaiza (sign him now!), P Tony Armas Jr. (do not return any of his calls), IF Carlos Baerga (send him a gold watch), OF Preston Wilson (send him a really large glove), P Joey Eischen (sign him too), and Deivi Cruz (uhhhhhhhh).
Potential Owner Vows to Never Move Nationals - AP/WTOP
Jeff Smulyan explains that his local investors (to the tune of $100 million) could veto any move out of D.C. Charles "Hungry" Mann, one of several former Redskins in the Smulyan bid added:
Why are people getting on that tangent? I don't understand that. People threaten to move if you don't build them a new stadium. Well, guess what? The stadium's being built. So let's just stop with that. That's a smoke screen by somebody that doesn't make any sense.
Mann makes a good point, but how many people are worried about Smulyan moving the team? My worries are more along the line of "if Jeff Smulyan wants to do for Washington what he did for Seattle" or some other political cliche.

WE'RE STUCK WITH BOWDEN FOR THE OFFSEASON; PROBABLY LONGER

Nationals Extend Bowden's Contract - The Post
GM Jim Bowden signed a contract extension that will keep him in Washington through the offseason. He signed utility infielder Damian Jackson and 2B Bernie Castro (AP/WJLA).

Bowden's signing probably means Frank Robinson's tenure is the dugout is over. Bowden is shooting for Thanksgiving to make that decision, but ultimately, it probably will not be made until the team has an owner and there is no telling which Thanksgiving we will be celebrating when that happens.

Also, Franklin Haney, a bidder for the Nats again stated that the owner should pay for cost overruns which means there is no way that MLB will sell him the team.

MEET SOMEONE WHO WON'T GET THE NATS

Bidder Would Pay Overruns - The Post
Franklin L. Haney has gone on the record as saying he would pay for cost overruns for the ballpark, something that sounds great to the District, but must sound awful to MLB who believes in only 100% public financing. Haney was not named as one of the top three groups likely to be awarded the team and this probably seals his fate. He is willing to do this because he wants to be awarded development rights in the Ballpark District.

A POETIC PLEA TO MLB

Memo to Bud! Memo to Bud!
The World Series is over,
Time to pick the Nats’ owner.
But not that out-of-towner,
For that would be a downer
To all DC fans who have waited so long
For baseball to come back.
Don’t do us wrong!

(Wait--you already did,
With that damn TV deal
That placates O’s “fears”--
None of them real.)

Do the right thing, Bud,
Just once for DC.
You gave us the Expos,
To our unbridled joy!
But everything since has felt like a ploy:
Bad TV deal, no owner, old venue,
With new ballpark politicking next on the menu.

The DC fanbase has spoken:
We’ve all had enough
Of broken promises, lies, and petty fluff.

I’m not sure who to be more angry with:
The bickering DC Council or the MLB stiffs
That play DC like a puppet show
With no care for the fans
Who make the game what it is,
Again and again.

So please, Bud, just do the right thing:
Give the Nats a local owner--
And do it NOW!
Quit stalling and act.
Surprise us all with your sudden tact.

MORE ON LEASE NEGOTIATIONS; BOWDEN MIGHT GET EXTENSION

Fear of disaster holds up stadium - The Wash. Times
Well, this is interesting:
MLB has asked the city to soften its demand for a guaranteed annual lease payment, in part because it wants the ability to pay less rent or eliminate it in cases in which outside events -- such as catastrophic weather or terrorism -- would force the Nationals to play in another stadium.
I did not see this one coming. I would expect a lot of denials from either side that this is a sticking point. I am really beginning to wonder if MLB wants the Washington Nationals to exist.

I propose a solution to this continuous foot-dragging at every step of the way -- we rename the team. How about the...

PROBLEMS WITH THE BALLPARK

Is RFK II in the cards?

Council To Revisit Stadium Financing - The Post
District CFO Natwar Ghandi informed the council that Wall Street will not give a "investment-grade rating until the legislation is changed to correct several technical problems." This means the council will get to reopen "Pandora's Box" and could change a number of things, such as the location of the facility. Some council members, like David Cantiana are licking their chops in anticipation.

This is of course, holding up the lease, which is holding up the ownership being named. It's GRIDLOCK!

In the end I could live with an RFK II, but I would rather see the ballpark built on 1/2 Street. The economic upside of building there is much higher than by RFK because on 1/2 Street you can build restuarants, bars, apartments, and more that will bring in revenue EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. A remote RFK location will only bring revenue when there is an event and most of that revenue is going straight to the Nats owners, not the District. On paper, it is probably a better deal for the owners to have RFK II. The RFK II location is also a longer walk from Metro.

More council infighting, this time between Chairman Linda Cropp and Vincent Orange (Ward 5) over the ballpark. FREDDY VS. JASON

THOM LOVERRO - Smulyan gets points in fight - The Wash. Times
Loverro thinks the MLB wants Jeff Smulyan to buy the Nationals because they know what they are getting -- he will not go out and sign anyone for $250 million. They want him because they know he will hold the line on salaries. Loverro also notes that the D.C. Council and MLB are like Freddy vs. Jason because neither deserves a halo.
    DAVE MCKENNA - Home-Field Advantage - CityPaper
The Cheap Seats columnist weighs in on Smulyan and reminds us that every potential owner has been roughed up throughout this process. He also notes that local ownership is far from the norm in MLB. Smulyan adds:
"I keep hearing, 'Local ownership!' And I understand that. But it’s also true that the most local owner baseball had was Marge Schott. That didn’t work out, did it?"
I will add Peter Angelo$ to that list as well.

In the end, I am anti-Smulyan because he already failed as an MLB owner, not because he is from Indiana.

    MLB: NOVEMBER

Nats' Sale Could Be Delayed by White Sox' Wins - The Post

Hernandez's knee surgery is a success - The Wash. Times

Also, MASN beat Comcast in court again.
Landowners must yield to ballpark - The Wash. Times
Eminent domain has begun in the ballpark footprint. Those landowners who did not sell may be wishing they had when they see what the District gives them. Hopefully, it will all be fair.

Also, this is why the District's threat to stop building the ballpark without a local owner awarded the team is probably not taken seriously by MLB. That being said, I am sure we will see some histrionics from both sides before it is all over.
Ehrlich Says He Knew About Lawyer's Hiring for Baseball Matter - The Post

Year 1 of the Washington Nationals ended yesterday with a 9 - 3 loss, but that hardly mattered, because it was a much better year (The Wash. Times) than we could have reasonably expected. While it would have been great to beat the Phillies at least once in this series to get above .500, just having a .500 team was good enough for this season. Also, Brad Wilkerson had an off year, but is still going to have less strikeouts than last season. Hopefully, he can recover in the offseason and come back healthy. I do not want to see him traded; I would hate for him to have to find a new bank.
Nats Ownership Might Be Corporate - The Post
Jeff Smulyan may invest some Emmis Broadcasting cash into the Nats if he buys them. Of course, he may be using the Nats as a front to buy the Reds (Capitol Punishment). Count me as someone who wants to believe that is true.

Trading Mike Stanton was brilliant. The Nats shouldn't have been planning to re-sign him anyway, given that Robinson uses him wrong. Lefties are batting .232 against him, righties are batting .358. Yet Robinson let Stanton pitch JUST AS OFTEN against lefties (82 AB) as righties (81 AB).

And if you're not going to re-sign him, then letting him leave four days early is TOTALLY worth a couple extra arms to look at next year.

CARRASCO GETS FIRST WIN AS STARTER

Out of Bullpen and Into Spotlight - The Post
The Nats shutout Florida last night to pull a game over .500. Hector Carrasco went six innings to get his first win as a starter.

The Marlins are imploding right now (more below), which seemingly bodes well for the Nats hopes of ending the year above .500.

NATIONALS NOTEBOOK - Burnett Will 'Absolutely' Consider Nats - The Post
A.J. Burnett, who is now persona non grata on the Marlins would consider pitching in Washington. The begs the question, do the Nats want a guy that went 0-6 with a 5.87 ERA down the stretch?

    NATS ARE ELIMINATED

Nats Cap a Freefall From Grace - The Post
After getting swept by the Mets, the Nationals are officially eliminated from the wild card race. They are now .500 and in last place.

I am exhausted from biking the entire W&OD Trail yesterday, I am just going to post headlines for the rest of the articles.

AT LEAST LOAIZA DIDN'T GET THE LOSS

Flushing Meadows 5 Capitol Hill 2

Nats Take A Tumble In the 10th - The Post
Esteban Loazia pitched pretty well, getting 7 Ks in 7 innings. Naturally, the two runs he gave up were pretty much an insurmountable deficit for the Nats to overcome while he was still in the game.

The Nats did came back in the ninth though. 3B Dutch Zimmerman (3 for 4) got on with a single. Two batters later, PH Carlos Baerga hit one out to the tie the game.

Sadly, folk hero Rick Short is out for the year (nationals.com) with a partially dislocated shoulder. Hopefully, he can recover and be retained by the Nats next year. We could use that bat.

    NATS SHUTOUT GIANTS

Nats Win With New Cast of Players - The Post
The Nats "played the kids" yesterday and reaped the dividends. The only "regular" in the lineup was Tony Kornheiser's boy, Ryan Church.

P Hector Carrasco had another good start, going 5 2/3's without giving up a run. As much as it pains us to do so, we must acknowledge that Jim Bowden looks awfully smart for the Carrassco signing.

SOMEDAY I CAN TELL MY GRANDKIDS I BOOED BARRY BONDS

    Giants 5 Nationals 1

Loss Leaves Nats Wistful - The Post
It was not much of a showing for our Nationals. Barry Bonds, villian, homered in the first with a man on. That was all the Giants would need as the Nats could not get enough men on base often enough to do much damage. The only run of the game came off an infield hit that Cristian Guzman ran out, allowing Vinny Castilla to score.

John Patterson did not pitch his best game, though did strikeout Bonds a couple of times. Giants pitcher Brad Hennessey went yard off of Paterson; it was that kind of night.

DEFEAT SNATCHED FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY

    Giants 4 Nats 3

Behind Bonds Looms Nats' Loss - The Post
The Nats went into the ninth leading 2 - 1, but found they were to blow it (The Wash. Times). ¡LIVAN! was kept in (too long?) and proceeded to put two men on base, including Barry Bonds, who homered earlier. Moises Alou made the Nats pay, hitting a 3 run HR to seal the game.

The Nats picked up a run in the bottom half of the inning, on a Dutch Zimmerman sacrifice. Brad Wilkerson was robbed on a shot to left by defensive replacement Todd Linden to end the game. Even Bonds admitted that had he been there, "we would've lost."

I plan on being there tonight to boo Bonds (The Post) and hopefully see a victory for a change.

Nats' Church Apologizes for Remarks About Jews - The Post
There is fallout from The Post's Sunday article on religion in the clubhouse. Chaplin Jon Moeller has been barred from the clubhouse after this exchange with Ryan Church:
The players not only pray, but they also discuss personal matters -- marital tension, addiction issues, family illnesses, financial stress -- drawing sometimes surprising lessons. Church was concerned because his former girlfriend was Jewish. He turned to Moeller, "I said, like, Jewish people, they don't believe in Jesus. Does that mean they're doomed? Jon nodded, like, that's what it meant. My ex-girlfriend! I was like, man, if they only knew. Other religions don't know any better. It's up to us to spread the word."
The Nats were in full spin control yesterday morning: Washington Nationals statement regarding Washington Post article.

I realize why the Nats suspended the chaplin -- they don't want to offend anyone and they cannot suspend Church for this kind of thing, blah blah blah. Still, can anyone really be surprised that a religious official suggested that "if you don't worship my God you are going to hell?" Many faiths preach that message and have for centuries, so this is not exactly shocking.

The Christian Communication Network is not happy about the move by the Nationals. They have issued a press release denouncing the decision.
Rev. Schenck intends on faxing to the Nationals' owners an offer to assist in mediating the dispute.
So, is he going to send 29 faxes?
Schneider back as starting catcher - The Wash. Times
C Brian Schneider has returned, freeing us from Gary Bennett's .220 BA.
THOM LOVERRO - Barry should've been a lot nicer - The Wash. Times
An interesting column, based on a Playboy article, about how the BALCO/Bonds investigation got started. Apparently, an IRS agent who did not like the way Bonds treated the press befriended a California narcotics officer who would go undercover for the investigation.

I don't know about you, but I think I have to read that original article...
Nationals' Price Tag Set at $450 Million - The Post

As Stadium Clock Ticks, D.C. Officials Bicker - The Post

SWEEP THE METS, SWEEP THE METS, THE NATS JUST SWEPT THE METS

Nats' Sweep of Mets Is a Team Effort - The Post
Using 21 Players, Team Ties It in 9th, Wins Game in 10th on Single by Castilla: Nationals 6, Mets 5
Admit it, you were discouraged when you saw Cliff Floyd's grand slam erase a three run lead. It's okay, given the way this team has put us through the ringer since July 4, you had a right to be skeptical. However, the Nats came back.

"That's what it's about," outfielder Brad Wilkerson said.

You can say many things about these Nationals, but one thing is undeniable: they're scrappy.
