Minnesota newspaper Nats headline fail
Twin Cities paper goes way back in time for Strasburg headline - Big League Stew The headline writer for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune used "Senators" in a headline about Stephen Strasburg (or as I call him Prometheus). The Senators of course were the name the original Washington MLB franchise was best known as though it was also called the Nationals and Nats; Charlie Brotman made Senators official in the mid-1950s. They moved to Minnesota for the 1961 season. The second D.C. MLB team was called Senators as well.
I mention this happening because somebody in the Star-Tribune newsroom needs to be reminded that if not for the racism of Calvin Griffith, he may not have a home team.
Also, a co-worker asked about the "Senators" recently. He, for what it is worth, is from New York State and used to follow the Binghamton Senators AHL team.

Stephen Strasburg makes his Nats spring debut today
2009 #1 MLB draft pick and the "best pitching prospect ever" Stephen Strasburg makes his first spring start for the Washington Nationals today (Nationals Journal, The Post). It counts as much as any other spring training game and unless something completely amazing or dreadful happens this event will struggle to even be a footnote in the collective (un)conscious of Nats fans. That it comes with the Nats 0-6 in spring training may even add some unnecessary urgency to Strasburg's appearance.
So, with that in mind, does The Post not having a story in the dead tree edition show restraint or a lack of commitment by that sports department? I would have at least expected a Thomas Boswell column, but I guess that will arrive tomorrow morning. At least there is an article about the guy who used to manage in D.C. because that um, matters.
Game is 1 p.m. on MASN (boo!), MLB.tv and Gameday Audio (worth the $19.99 for the season).
Olsen: "This is the best I've felt" - Nats Insider Wouldn't it be nice if one of these pitchers was saying "this is the best I've felt" after pitching well" sometime soon?
For those out of the market I believe the game will be aired on MLB Network as well! I'll be watching!

Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler on air today; Strasburg on CBS News
I've become more of a homer as the years have gone by and find myself preferring the myopia of hometown broadcasters.* This afternoon, at 2:30 1:05 p.m. is the first chance to listen to the Washington Nationals radio team of Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler. Oh, how I have missed their discussions of pancakes. The Nats are playing on the Florida Marlins today. On terrestrial radio, are on WFED 1050 AM, but the preferred way for me to hear them is via Gameday Audio. It is well worth the money for the season.
On Saturday, the CBS Evening News did a profile on Stephen Strasburg. It doesn't share anything new, but the social contract says I have to post it.
The Nats are 0-5 in Spring Training so far, try not to get concerned.
*Bob Carpenter and Rob Dibble are excluded from this -- not because of any MASN hate (though that'd be a good reason) but because they are not any good.

@washingnats, aka nationals.com beat writer Bill Ladson, asked if the Washington Nationals should name Ryan Zimmerman captain of the team. While Zimmerman seems to be doing quite well as a quiet team leader on and off the field, I don't feel its necessary to make anything official. @dcsportsbog tweeted this by the way: Yikes, all of those players are not playing in D.C. anymore. Let's definitely not name Zimmerman captain. Actually, I think the Nats would do well to formalize Cristian Guzman's leadership role, don't you?
Captaincy seems to be working out ok for one fellow and his team though.

PRESS RELEASE - Washington Nationals partner with National Cherry Blossom Festival - nationals.com I have been critical about the Nats nearly non-existent marketing from about day one. Back then it was because MLB did not want to spend money or do anything to offend cowardly, coddled Peter Angelos. The Lerner/Kasten regime did not improve matters much after the first weekend of ownership. To say they have had a learning curve would be understating it -- they have a learning sphere (about the size of the baseball that was proposed for behind centerfield). So, when the press release linked above came into my Inbox, I was pleased. I can't say if partnering with the long-running National Cherry Blossom Festival will sell them many tickets in 2010, but it is a step in the right direction.
"The blooming of the cherry blossoms and the crack of the bat have come to signify the start of Spring in Washington," said Nationals President Stan Kasten. "The Nationals are excited to take part in the National Cherry Blossom Festival, a long-standing tradition in the District celebrating the beginning of new seasons - Spring and baseball."
Kasten is exaggerating about the baseball part, but hopefully it won't be an exaggeration much longer. The exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox on April 3 and the second and third games of the season vs. the Philadelphia Phillies are also officially part of the festival.
Good work Nats PR, you are showing signs of improvement.
In other news: I can't get worked up one way or another about spring training games. The Nats went with split squads yesterday and got crushed (Nationals Journal, The Post) by the Houston Astros and Florida Marlins. Maybe I'll listen on Monday when Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler are doing the game.

Washington Nationals' Adam Dunn focuses on playing the field - The Post I'd extend Adam Dunn's contract by 2 years with a possible club option for a third. He doesn't want to negoiate during the season, so I expect they come up with something, though it may not be announced until after Opening Day.
Dunn has helped the lineup, particularly Ryan Zimmerman, and is entertaining. If need be, I think Dunn can be flipped to an AL team at the deadline during his contract year. I am skeptical that Chris Marrero is ever going to be an every day first baseman.
Stephen Strasburg's starting point - Nationals Journal, The Post I am on board with keeping Stephen Strasburg in the minors until June or less he completely overwhelms the minor leagues. I'd rather see him get used to pitching every five days -- remember he only pitched weekly in college, without major league pressure.
Plus there is the whole, let's not start the arbitration clock too.
Maxwell's make-or-break moment - Nats Insider Can Justin Maxwell be more than a fourth outfielder? At 26, the Olney, Md. native is running out of time to find out. He'd rather be on the bench in the majors than starting in the minors, but since the club still has options on him, he will probably do both.
Oh and I'm still kicking myself for backtracking on my plans to go to the final home game of the season last year and missing Maxwell's walk-off grand slam (video).

Good thing I knew a season ticketholder; Nats Opening Day nearly sold out
Opening Day tix nearly sold out - Nats Insider I would love to think that the Washington Nationals selling out all but singles to Opening Day by 10:07 a.m. meant a healthy fanbase, but I have a bad feeling it means a lot of seats were sold to Phillies fans already. If that's the case, Stan Kasten is going to be raked over the coals.
Let me publicly thank my friend Joe Riley for ordering me some tickets ahead of the public sale. Not only did he secure me some seats, but he saved me some money.
If it is the case that the majority of tickets were sold to Phillies fans, that is an atrocity and somebody should rightfully be called out for it!
But, as a Phillies fan, I am grateful for the opportunity to come down and watch my team play in your home stadium on Opening Day. :)

THOMAS BOSWELL - With real pitchers, Washington Nationals inch closer to being a real team - The Post The headline is more accurate than the column. Boswell is too excited about the fact that Nationals pitchers in spring training this year are not the type that have proven they are no good, just unproven. Calm down Bos. Are things looking better? Maybe. April and May aren't the easiest months and this team could get buried quickly.
With the possible exception of Opening Day, tickets should be plentiful enough that you can wait to get them at the Nationals Park ticket window day of game most of the time. It sure beats paying all the service fees.

That headline probably looks familiar because it is the one I wrote after I read Harlan's infamous Washingtonian interview, though Harlan didn't include the link to it. It turns out that saying you are embarrassed to cover sports isn't a great idea, but I don't think Harlan had many consequences other than his own regret. His fellow beat writers (Nats Insider) seemed to like him which says a lot.
To his credit, Harlan could overcome hating his job enough to write some pretty good feature stories (like the Jesus Flores story of last week) but his game recaps tended to be mediocre. He feel in love with his own snark sometimes too, using a hammer when a scalpel was more appropriate.
Adam Kilgore has assumed the role of Nats beat writer and so far I'm pleased with what I am seeing. Kilgore has enthusiasm for the beat and has taken to pulling out the flip cam down at spring training. So far, so good, but the real test is how his gamers come out. I'm eager to read them.

The Washington Nationals are holding a contest to pick the 3rd bobblehead giveaway of the 2010 season. Ryan Zimmerman (June 19) and Nyjer Morgan (July 31) are already planned. The choices are catchers Ivan Rodriguez and Jesus Flores, plus manager Jim Riggleman, pitcher John Lannan and Teddy from the Racing Presidents or a write-in. While it would be interesting to see how accurate the reproduction of Lannan's eyebrows would be, the obvious choice is a write-in candidate, none other than Mr. Tony Plush, Morgan's "gentleman name." Make it happen Nats fans.
Special advisor to the GM, Davey Johnson says Ian Desmond should be an everyday shortstop. Johnson does not elaborate on where he should be playing SS everyday though. @washingnats
Adam Kilgore introduces himself as the Nats beat writer for The Post and sounds good, though his line "Baseball is woven into the hum and churn of a city, the games playing on bar TVs while the first happy hour bleeds into the next, the second-guessing starting on the walk from the bleachers to the Metro, the aftermath still hovering the next morning" is not as accurate as we'd like. I have Lannan's P-Nats bobblehead from '06. The eyebrows are eerily faithful. Through the prism of time you can just barely glimpse the sweet-looking kid who would grow up to mow down Ryan Howard and Chase Utley in his first MLB appearance.

Speaking of old Nats, Brad Wilkerson signed a minor league deal with the Phillies. I'll always have a soft spot for him for getting the Nats first hit on Opening Day and then hitting for the cycle in the second game against the Phillies.

Two seasons ago, when he was with Texas and performing fairly well, he flipped out when he was told he was traded to Washington. Now, he's cool with the Nats because nobody else wants him around. If he makes the team, he gets a short-leash as far as I'm concerned. Dude has to be perfect, otherwise merciless heckling should be sent his way.

Phillies' model gives Nationals hope for future - The Inky Apparently, in the eyes of one beat writer, the current Washington Nationals resemble the Philadelphia Phillies of the past. Let's see if I remember my history properly -- the Phillies were generally inept and in denial of their status as a big market franchise. They were getting better, in part because they were drafting character players (like Brett Myers -- okay bad example) but it wasn't until they got a real GM that they started getting over the hump because that GM brought in complementary players to the young talent. He spent money too. That GM was Pat Gillick who openly campaigned for the Nats job in 2005.

Apparently, Wood had known elbow problems, but was pitching too well in the minors and Riggleman was criticized for taking the young phenom out too soon. Anybody remember if that was actually the case?
Sounds about right but let's not use Brett Myers as the best example of the Phillies' methods. Instead take a hard look at drafting guys like Rollins, Utley, Hamels, and Howard (and Burrell).
It is clear that the Phillies took the time to restock the farm system and although they could have easily traded guys like Utley and Howard years ago, they held on to them, believing that they could be important parts of a winning team.
Three NL East titles, two NL titles and one World Series title may be evidence that the formula works.

Scott Olsenwants to win a spot in the rotation (Florida Today), doesn't think that being a lefty helps him and has not seen so much pitching talent in one spring training before. Olsen had surgery to repair a torn labrum last summer.
Mike Rizzotalked to the media on Saturday, but did not elaborate on whether he was in the "best shape of his life.". He wants Adam Dunn to sign an extension, Ian Desmond is an every day shortstop, but whether it is in Washington or Syracuse has yet to be determined.

Nats pitchers and catchers report today!
Ah, the welcome sign of spring -- pitchers and catchers reporting in Florida (Florida Today)! As always, it is appropriate that snow is on the ground in D.C. when the Washington Nationals begin showing up in Viera, Fla. for spring training.
One pitcher who won't be checking in Ross Detwiler, who just had hip surgery (Nats Insider). He is out until at least May. Nationals Enquirer reminds us that a former team employee said Detwiler could be pitching in 2009, if not 2008. Also, the original report said he'd be out 10 weeks, now it is 12 weeks. Given the way these things have gone for the Nats, I hope you like your new hip Ross.
American hero John Lannanis really the only starting pitcher the Nats have developed (The Post), something that nobody really expected. He enters his third full season as the likely #2, a spot that will hopefully mean more than 9 wins for the Long Island native. No pitcher with 200+ innings had fewer than Lannan's 89 strikeouts. Countering that, no other pitcher induced as many double plays, making Lannan the poster boy for the "pitch to contact" philosophy.
The Nats have not talked to Kris Benson's agent (@washingnats) due to arbitration. Usually, the lack of multitasking is a concern -- not this time. I don't want that loser Benson mentoring Stephen Strasburg.
For all the grief that he caused, both as a Washington Redskins executive and as media personality, I'll say this for Vinny Cerrato -- he's been quiet lately. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit because this is one of the few relatively quiet times during the year for the NFL and he doesn't have a media job. Seriously though, when was the last time you saw a DC Sports Bog post about him? He has not gone out and gotten a Twitter account or anything else. It is appreciated.
I wish I could say the same about a couple of other failed GMs, one from Washington another from Long Island, that keep appearing on DC related blogs and twitter.
Folks, maybe if we ignore them, they will go away too.

Nationals pitcher Matt Chico is healthy and ready for spring training - The Post I admit it, I completely forgot about Matt Chico, the lefty who led the Washington Nationals in starts in 2007. Since then, he has had Tommy John surgery after tearing a ligament in early 2008. While the article does not say he is in the "best shape of his life" Chico suggests that this is the best he has felt in a long time. His fastball got up to 93 MPH in the minors last year. Also, with a newborn and a 16 month old at home, Chico has bloodshot eyes, raccoon rings and a slow, zombie shuffle. Frankly, that's how I remember him in 2007.

Nats win arbitration case with Bruney - nationals.com Brian Bruney, late of the New York Yankees and now under contract with the Washington Nationals, lost his arbitration case yesterday. This saves the Nats a whole $375,000. As FJB points out, the Nats go to arbitration an awful lot. Somebody with a press pass needs to ask Nats president Stan Kasten if was that the business model in Atlanta during the 14 consecutive division titles run under his watch. Then they need to see what he says and run it against the historical record.
Given that the Nats have had a whole 2 seasons out of 5 that expectations were exceeded and three that were pretty bad perhaps it may be time to re-evaluate this policy. Arbitration is a tough process where the team has to list why a player isn't worth more money. It is reasonable to assume that players who have been badmouthed by management and paid less than they wanted might not give as optimum an effort all the time. I'm not saying I feel sorry for guys like Bruney who will make only $1.5 million, I'm just saying it is the way it is.

Nats now selling Chien-Ming Wang jerseys
Nats Web site selling Wang jerseys - DC Sports Bog, The Post Since yesterday morning, Chien-Ming Wang jerseys have been available in the official Washington Nationals online store. Apparently, this is the new way of announcing signings.
Also, Collin Balestar, you lost your number again.
Why the Nats signed Wang - Nats Insider So Wang (prounced Wong, you've been saying it wrang) is apparently the other free agent starter the Nats were going to sign. There is a problem though -- the former Yankees ace, who was baseball's winning-est pitcher in 2006-2007 (38 victories) won't pitch until May. Wang had shoulder surgery last year that led to the Yankees non-tendering him. He also missed 2008 with a foot injury. I wondered why the Nats would pay $2 million for him to pitch 4-5 months, at best? The answer is because Washington has control of him next season too, so if Wang turns out well, they have a valuable asset, if not, little is lost. Not a bad signing, but it'd be better if Wang was the third free agent pickup for the rotation and not the second.

Stephen Strasburg era begins for Washington Nationals - The Post The story of the Washington Naitonals spring training is going to be Stephen Strasburg. The 2009 #1 pick is one of the best pitching prospects ever, but being a prospect is a lot different than being a major leaguer, much less an elite one. He seems to have it together in his head and heart, but it takes a lot more -- health, coaching, luck, fortitude, etc.
Strasburg's likely to start the 2010 season in A ball with the Potomac Nationals and then, if he is up to the task, move up the ladder to AA-Harrisburg, AAA Syracuse and hopefully Washington. Nats president Stan Kasten says Strasburg won't be marketed either which makes sense.
If Strasburg is all that people say he is, the Nats could contend much sooner, if not, we'll see.

Checking back in with our Washington Nationals
You would think that working from home for much of the week would be good for blogging, but it turns out it isn't.
2B Adam Kennedy, 34, has been signed for $1.25 million (nationals.com). Solid, if unspectacular signing I suppose. I guess they figure Cristian Guzman is not going to play second base which means he is probably at shortstop holding back Ian Desmond.
Some reports say former Yankee Chien-Ming Wangwill sign with DC. I think the negotiations went some along the line of
Wang: What do you take me for?
Rizzo: We've already established that, now we're just haggling over price.
Wang is really just a stopgap to take up roster space until Stephen Strasburg and other young pitchers are ready. That and a euphemism that the gentleman of the Natmosphere have completely avoided noted.
Speaking of young pitching, Jordan Zimmermann wants to pitch again in September (nationals.com). He had Tommy John surgery in the middle of last season. He's throwing the a ball 90 feet now. Kris Benson (nationals.com)? Isn't he just just Kip Wells with a trashy wife? I think the pitching mound has had enough of the Pittsburgh diaspora. I suppose Benson could tell Strasburg about being #1 overall, but would any of it be good? Perhaps if Strasburg was instructed to do the opposite of anything Benson says. Seems unnecessary though. President's Race tryouts were just held. - Let Teddy Win.
Apparently, former Post intern Adam Kilgore is Chico Harlan's replacement on the Nats beat. Like Harlan, Kilgore is a Syracuse grad, but hopefully unlike Harlan he like sports. NatsFanBoyLooser is familiar with Kilgore and pleased by the news.
Speaking of beat writers, Mark Zuckerman, late of The Wash. Times, is blogging. He also asked for donations on his blog to send him to spring training and it was an overwhelming success. He met his $5,000 goal in a couple of days and has already doubled it. Good for him -- he was the best reporter on the Nats beat last year and he is going to keep on doing what he did, but I'll admit I'm not as into this whole thing as say, FJB. Nats single game tickets will finally go on sale March 2
PRESS RELEASE - Washington Nationals individual tickets on sale Tuesday, March 2 at 10:00am - The Post I don't know why the Washington Nationals wait so long to put single game tickets on sale every year. I'm sure they will say so that they make sure season ticketholders get the first dibs, but this is ridiculous. When you are drawing less than 2 million in a market as big as D.C., you ought to be maximizing opprutunities to sell tickets. Any way, starting March 2 at 10 a.m. the public sale is on.
The promotions schedule is also updated. If I am one of the first 20,000 on Opening Day fans, I will get that ugly batting practice hat. There are also Ryan Zimmerman and Nyjer Morgan bobbleheads being given out during the season. As for hte "fan choice bobblehead" it has to be Tony Plush.
Rather than pay for service fees, is there a season ticketholder who will order 2 Opening Day tickets for me? I'm looking for $20 tickets behind home plate in the upper deck. Unless you can get me lower deck tickets for $20 :)
Actually, if you're one of the first 20,000 on Opening Day you won't get that ugly BP cap. You'll get a cheap made-in-China facsimile of it, which will probably be even uglier.

Again, why no Nats single game tickets for sale?
I couldn't make it to NatsFest or any of the Winter Caravan this year, but based onseveralaccounts, these events were well-received. There was also a number of media appearances by members of the organization which is also refreshing in the dead of winter with spring training still a few weeks away. I still have a big problem with all of this though:
WHY CAN'T I BUY SINGLE GAME TICKETS YET?!
A full week of good PR that is not getting turned into ticket sales. What's the deal Stan Kasten? I thought you were the genius of the 1990s Atlanta Braves, this stuff shouldn't be too hard. The reality of it is, the longer this kind of thing goes on, the more I'm reminded of Homer Simpson, union negotiator.
The Capitals broke a 1-1 tie with the Anaheim Ducks in the 3rd period and charged to a 5-1 win. Eight wins in a row, not bad, how about doing it in May and June? :)

Nats caravan underway, Lerner chat, 3 signed
The Nats Winter Caravan starts today with stops at the Clarendon Hard Times Cafe (mmmm, Hard Times) and Build-A-Bear in Tysons Corner. Danny Espinosa, SS prospect Drew Storen, pitching prospect, Jim Riggleman, manager, Rob Dibble, TV Broadcaster and Ryan Speier, pitcher will be signing autographs.
Mark Lerneris chatting at 1 p.m. Let's see if he gets called out after yesterday's Post article that Capital Punishment reminded us was the same one written in 2007. In reality, I expect more softball questions like Q&A on nationals.com yesterday. Three players were signed the other day, relief pitcher Tyler Walker, P Chuck James (broken wing and all) and OF Chris Duncan. James isn't bad to have around in case he gets his arm back, but they better not be counting on him to be in the rotation. Speaking of, they didn't sign John Garland, so not many options remain for another starting pitcher. So, I guess we'll see Livan Hernandez again. Walker should have a spot in the bullpen.

Nats have a real front office now? We'll see
Front-office overhaul gives Washington Nationals new respect - The Post Entering their sixth season (wow, already?!) the Washington Nationals appear to finally have a MLB quality front office after two years of MLB rule and another three years of excuses and Jim Bowden. At long last, the Lerner ownership seems to be following The Plan that Stan Kasten preached but didn't actually follow. The promotion of Mike Rizzo, well-regarded from his long career as a scout, to general manager has given the franchise credibility throughout the sport. At least, that is what the Nats front office keeps saying.
The story is framed in part by the hiring of Jay Robertson, a Texas Rangers cast-off with over 25 years of scouting experience. Robertson was 95% committed to going to a different team and only spoke to Rizzo as a courtesy. However, Rizzo talked Robertson into signing with the Nats before they even got to specifics like car allowance and per diems. After a 10 hour session with the whole braintrust over the organization's players and the free agents available, Robertson said he had not had that much fun in 10 to 15 years. Rizzo says the Nats now have "manpower and brainpower." Sounds good, but we'll need to see the results.
Conspicuous by its absence in the article was any mention of international scouting.
I thought the article was quite good actually. Rizzo has had a fine off-season from what I can tell, but also from what those who know the game keep saying.
You're getting a little too cynical lately!

Yes I did, but I tend to think Chris could be underestimating structural changes to the organization under Rizzo that did not exist under Bowden.
Plus I think Rizzo is about 1000 times more competent than Bowden, who I could not stand.
Of course I could be wrong.
I just enjoy this blog a lot because it is straight leaning skeptical, unlike Chris who I think is far too cynical and knee-jerk to bash the Lerners.

Nats ticketing needs to get its act together
Up on the wrong end of the B/W Parkway, single game tickets are going on sale for the upcoming baseball season this Saturday*. Meanwhile, here in the Nation's Capital, our Washington Nationals don't even know when single game tickets go on sale. On Twitter, I asked new follower @NatsTix when they would be on sale:
Single game #Nats tickets should go on sale by the end of February. Once I get a firmer date, I'll let you know.
Yes, that sounds familiar compared to other seasons, but why wait? The official reason is they are still selling season tickets, but really, they can't do both at the same time?
I don't blame the @NatsTix and appreciate the outreach, but let's have it go both ways. In a sensible world, single-game tickets would be available before Christmas because; I'd like some of them in my stocking. The person I'm blaming, well...

One of the three pillars that Stan Kasten talks about is customer satisfaction and I don't think waiting until a month before the season helps meet that criterion.
*Listen, I don't like sounding like the pucksandboots of the Natmosphere, but be a good Washingtonian and just don't buy O's tickets. That's a bad franchise owned by a really bad man. See previousrants.

New Nats batting practice cap is ugly
For the first time the Washington Nationals batting practice cap is red with the curly W. The only thing that distinguishes it from the regular home cap is the ugly line that MLB has put on all the batting caps.
Given that batting practice caps only exist to sell more merchandise, you would think they wouldn't be so ugly. Additionally, I don't like the red cap with the blue batting jersey -- the opposite can look good (see Washington Capitals) though.

Nationals make deals with four players, avoiding arbitration - The Post Washington Nationals OF Josh Willingham got a big raise in his second year of arbitration -- up to $4.6 milllion from $2.95 million. Not bad if you an get it. Catchers Jesus Flores and Wil Nieves also avoid arbitration, as did reliever Jason Bergmann who will make $750,000 in 2010.
Only two other Nats, relievers Brian Bruney and Sean Burnett, are still slated for arbitration. Bruney was picked up from the Yankees in the offseason, while Burnett was acquired with Nyjer Morgan for Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

So, there are a few things going on in D.C. sports
The events of the last few days prove one thing -- The Wash. Times was SOOOOOOOO smart to cut their Sports section.
Washington Capitals name Alex Ovechkin captain - The Post Without hoopla and hype, superstar Alex Ovechkin was named the 14th regular captain in Washington Capitals history yesterday. I thought that Brooks Laich (who is another locker-room/media relations leader) may get it, but I find no fault with Ovi wearing the C -- nobody plays harder and that is one of the best examples a captain can set. Laich will certainly continue to contribute as well. The Great 8 turned down captaincy in 2006 because he was not yet comfortable with his English.
Now we move onto Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards nee Bullets...
MIKE WISE - Dear Gilbert, You've really blown it now - The Post In basketball, Gilbert continues to be Gilbert, but he is still in deep trouble. As I said before, never being serious is fun for a while, but not when the team is 11-21 and guns are involved. Its too bad, but his road to redemption is steep here in D.C. if he's even given the chance.
Some good news though -- the Wiz beat the Philadelphia 76ers again! Bad news -- they don't play again this season.
Redskins and Mike Shanahan reach agreement - The Post I for one welcome our new burgundy and gold overlord. I think Shanahan will make the Redskins respectable again, but don't see him getting a Super Bowl ring here. He will probably bring in a respectable offensive line though.

MASN hires Ben Goessling to cover Nats
I never did get my eulogy for The Wash. Times sports posted because time did not permit getting something together that was good enough. In short, that newspaper killed a portion of their business that they could really be competitive. D.C. sports fans are losing in this decision. Naturally,Times staffers are too, but as I suggested in an earlier post that other local media could use this as an opportunity. Already, one of the former writers on the Washington Nationals beat, Ben Goesslinghas been snapped up MASN the cable channel that broadcasts Nats games. MASN is operated primarily by the Baltimore Orioles ownership, who voted against Washington receiving the Expos. Goessling was solid on the beat for The Wash. Times and an alternative to the "I hate sports" attitude from Chico Harlan of The Post.
Interestingly enough, back around Christmas, I saw somebody liked or commented on Facebook photo of snowy Nationals Park. In the comments, somebody named Ben Goessling had the following things to say:
No Major League Baseball is currently being played on this field. No Major League Baseball will be played on this field next summer, either. I don't see the difference.
When he was challenged on it a little bit, he followed up with:
You're right. I'm sorry. There are 15 other teams in the National League who WILL be playing Major League Baseball on that field. I stand corrected.
Mr. Goessling, please elaborate on those statements, Nats fans would appreciate it.
