Welcome to the my Web site, v. XII. The blog is typically published Monday - Saturday. My primary topics tend to be the Nats, Penn State (esp. football), BeltwayLand, transportation, media, photos and more. The rest of the site gets updated as warranted and is noted on the blog.
Nittany Lions Earn 33rd Top 25 Ranking Under Joe Paterno - Intercollegiate Athletics Make it two consecutive top 25 finishes in a row for the Nittany Lions in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Actually, make it two consecutive #25 finishes in the Coaches Poll. The Nittany Lions were not ranked by the AP Poll coming in as the second "Also Receiving Votes" team.
I'll be participating in Blue White Roundtable at lunch today.

As expected and predicted, Penn State won the Valero Alamo Bowl. Joe Paterno wins about 67% of bowl games he has coached because he is successful in putting in new schemes like Daryl Clark running draw plays at quarterback while Anthony Morelli stays out of trouble split wide. When you consider that Morelli as a wideout ultimately meant Penn State was playing with ten players and just about every play Clark played at QB was a draw play, the success rate of Clark was phenomenal. It worked the other night, but won't work against the top half of the Big11Ten. We still don't know if Clark can throw the ball.
I think this was the Penn State bowl game that I was the least emotionally invested in ever. I even nodded off in the third quarter and missed A&M's field goal. This is what happens when a team gets in fights off the field and underachieves on it does to fans.
Speaking of Morelli, he's done! His disappointing career is finally over. I think he got some bad breaks along the way, but ultimately, he didn't have the necessary leadership skills and accuracy to lead a high powered team.
Rodney Kinlaw had another 100+ yards game. He is one of the most pleasant surprises of the season. The offensive line was the most pleasant surprise of the season.
I'm glad the coaches didn't panic when the Lions went down 14-0 and put the ball in Morelli's hands too much. I guess the realized that A&M just wasn't very good.
Good job by the defense overall, but holding the Aggies to no points after a 90+ yards drive has a lot to do with luck like A&M not using Jorvorskie Lane in short yardage. What were they thinking? No wonder Lane was on the sidelines crying.
A.J. Wallace had a costly fumble that led to 7 A&M points, but also recovered a fumble and an interception. I guess he was +1.
I'll acknowledge that Erin Andrews is probably the best sideline reporter out there, but seriously, she isn't a goddess. Good hair though.
Dan Connor had a solid final game, 9 tackles. He will be missed, but I still think Paul Posluszny was better overall. Sean Lee was in on 14 tackles.
NoVa native Evan Royster was effective in limited action, scoring the game clinching TD.
I'm excited about the lines for next season. The offensive line returns everyone and the defensive line will have lots of experience.
Good to see the cornerbacks weren't lined-up twelve yards deep on every play.

Blue White Roundtable: Alamo Bowl Eve
This pre-Alamo Bowl edition of Blue White Roundtable features questions from all of us.
WFY: Do you think any of the quarterbacks below Anthony Morelli will get any meaningful playing time on Saturday?
I don't think either Daryl Clark or Pat Devlin will get much playing time unless Penn State runs it up in the first half or Anthony Morelli gets hurt.
The Nittany Notebook: Other than the quarterbacks, what players would you like to see get significant playing time in the game for preparation for 2008?
Evan Royster, the next generation of linebackers and probably some DBs.
There Is No Name On My Jersey: Will Royster finish the game healthy? If not, how concerned should fans be about the RB position in '08?
I will give a Joe Paterno-type answer -- how should I know? I'm not too concerned about the running back position, because the offensive line looks better than it has in a long time.
Black Shoe Diaries: Obviously a loss to Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl would be devastating for the psyche of the program going into the off season. But is there anything good that can come out of beating a middle of the road Big XII team in a non-New Years Day bowl game? Basically, tell me why I should care about this game?
I don't think it is devastating to loss to Texas A&M unless they are completely embarrassed. They are basically playing a road game indoors against a team that can beat Texas. A loss could provide a wake-up call to a lot of people and get them to be more motivated for 2008. That being said, I'd prefer a victory. The reason to care about this game is self-evident.
The Nittany Line: Will 2008 be JoePa's last year and if so will the old man bow out gracefully or will he be forced out?
I don't think it will be his last year because I don't believe either Tim Curley or Graham Spainer has the guts to force Paterno out.
Run Up the Score!: When Joe Paterno finally retires, how long of a leash should the next coach get? What's the standard he'll be judged by, and does your answer depend on whether the new head coach comes from within or outside the program?
The next coach should start off with a five year contract and barring any seasons with eight or more losses after year two should be given the opportunity to coach for the duration of the contract. I believe a head coach from inside the program will be judged less harshly than an outsider, even though the opposite should be true.
Lightning Round
Your Alamo Bowl Prediction? Penn State 28 Texas A&M 20 Hopefully, we'll be back next week with a post-Alamo Bowl wrap-up.
After not talking to the media for 47 days and skipping an earlier press conference, Anthony Morellishowed up at the press conference for defensive players (The Collegian). Officially, there was a mix-up the other day and he's concerned with playing football.
A Texas A&M yell leader had this to say (Dallas Morning News) at the joint-pep rally (which is an odd thing, no?): "Joe Paterno's on his death bed! And someone needs to find him a casket!"
That went over about as well as one could expect and official A&M was all apologetic. I'm not too upset -- more bulletin board material for the Nittany Lions!
By the way, I would have linked to the Patriot-News story, but there was a flash ad that wouldn't go away and let me read the content.
A Big Ten football officiating team that came under scrutiny for its performance in two conference games last month was led by a crew chief with a history of bankruptcy, casino gambling, child abuse and allegations of sexual harassment, a Yahoo! Sports investigation has revealed.
I know, I'm shocked too. Does the Big11Ten go out of its way to discredit itself?
I think we'll be hearing the name Stephon Pamon a lot while this unfolds. It may amount to nothing, but it certainly doesn't look good from the outset. I want to know how many Penn State games Pamon has officiated. Was he there in 2003 at the Penn State vs. Ohio State game, for example?
There are reports out of Pittsburgh that Tom Bradley has been contacted by WVU to gauge interest in becoming their next head coach. I could not find an article to confirm it--perhaps you might have better luck.

No roundtable, but lots of Blue White news
Blue White Roundtable is on hiatus until we get closer to the Valero Alamo Bowl. In the meantime, there is a lot of Penn State football news.
BREAKING: Penn State and Oregon State will play on Sept. 6 in University Park (Intercollegiate Athletics). That's right, Beavers in Beaver. This has been expected for several weeks, but it just became official.
Brian Norwood's replacement as safeties coach (The Collegian) is Kermit Buggs. I now nothing about him other than he has been with the program for several years and he has a great name.
PSU secondary coach leaves for Baylor - William World News

PSU secondary coach leaves for Baylor
Norwood leaving Lions to take job with Baylor - Patriot-News Brian Norwood, Penn State's secondary coach since 2001, has accepted the position at Baylor. His son, Jordan, has been one of Penn State's primary receivers for three seasons.
Connor receives award - The Collegian MLB Dan Connor won the Chuck Bednarik Award last night. Connor now has half as many Bednarik Awards as Paul Posluszny, who won the last two. I would not be surprised Penn State is the first program to win three consecutive Bednariks. I'm also not the only one expecting LB Sean Lee be a finalist for the award next year.
1. PSU is lined up to play Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl. How are you feeling about the match-up and Penn State's chances?
If Penn State's coaching staff has been subscribing to the right e-mail newsletters (EDSBS), I'm feeling great about this game. Overall, I'm feeling pretty good -- despite the Texas win, I think Texas A&M is probably a lesser opponent. Throw in some coaching upheaval down there and Joe Paterno's high winning percentage in bowl games I am like the Nittany Lions' chances. I'll need to study up on A&M more though.
2. The BCS, fire away.
It is what it is and it won't be changing anytime soon. I'm so myopic about Penn State, I really can't work up the righteous indignation that Georgia or Virgina Tech couldn't get a shot. I feel bad for Hawaii though.
3. Will you be rooting for Tosu in order to help boost the profile of the conference or will you unmitigated hate win out?
I'm in a unique situation when it comes to Ohio State -- my job involves working on a Buckeyes site. It just so happens, I'll be coordinating between that site and one in Louisanna too, so I have to be objective, no?
I guess I'll be rooting for OSU, but I really don't have any loyalty to the conference.
LIGHTNING ROUND
Are you going to the Alamo Bowl?
No, I'll be in Pennsylvania with my in-laws; arrangements are being be made so that we all see the game on the big TV. Yay.
The next bowl game I attend with be the first.
How much PT does Devlin and Clarke see?
A series each, unless Morelli is hurt or Penn State is up by four touchdowns in the 3rd quarter.
Lions to face Texas A&M - The Collegian Penn State will be playing Texas A&M in the Valero Alamo Bowl, a rematch of the 1999 game. A&M went 7-5 under embattled head coach Dennis Franchione, who has since resigned. Defenseive coordinator Gary Darnell will helm the Aggies with Mike Sherman taking over full time next year.
It could also be Texas A&M or Texas Tech--http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3135658.
I have a buddy in grad school at A&M, so that's my vote, although it appears unlikely.
The best part of all this is Michigan is guaranteed to go a Orlando, but if Ohio State doesn't sneak into the national title game, they are likely headed to the widely popular Champs Sports Bowl! So can we assume the Alamo folks liked us better than Michigan?

Texas Tech was the first game of my college career, while Texas A&M was last. I think both are preferable matchups to Oklahoma State, though I won't be able to use the Mike Gundy video.

Paterno's Big11Ten pay rank; plans to coach for a few more years
I found the article I was looking for -- the one that notes what Joe Paterno makes compared to his Big11Ten peers or at least what everyone made in 2006. Out of the ten salaries available (Northwestern has not disclosed what Pat Fitzgerald earns) Paterno comes in eighth. Iowa is getting ripped off though.
Yetserday, Paterno talked to sportswriters from several newspapers, but notThe Collegian. He plans to coach for a few more years which was breaking news when Ronald Reagan was president -- the first term.
By the way, I have envisioned a similar scenario in mind for Paterno's exit from Penn State:
The perfect ending is you drop dead at the end of the game after you kick the winning field goal," Paterno joked Thursday during a lunch-time news conference inside Beaver Stadium.
And they carry you off the field and everyone's singing, 'So long, Joe, you've been wonderful.
I think I would rather see him step down and joyfully watch a coach not named Paterno lead the Nittany Lions to a national title.
Lastly, the newspaper, the Patriot-News, that started the whole "what does Paterno make" saga that:
gave bloggers like me so many opportunities to tell the world we don't care what Paterno makes
led to a co-worker of mine who cares nothing for sports to mention it this morning -- keep in mind I live near Washington D.C., not Pennsylvania
has an editorial that says the octogenarian coach is underpaid.
*rim shot*
P.S. BeanoWatch is postponed until tomorrow morning.
Paterno's salary revealed: $512,664 - William World News
Paterno's salary revealed: $512,664
Paterno salary secret revealed - Patriot-News I have never understood why the Patriot-News was so determined to find out Joe Paterno's salary. I say this as a supporter of a vigorous free press in favor of Sunshine Laws too. Is it that important to know how much he makes, especially given that he is paid by the Nittany Lion Club? In a state as dysfunctional as Pennsylvania was going after Paterno's salary the best use of the Patriot-News' resources?
The Collegiancompares his salary with that of Bobby Bowden, Ron Zook and Jim Tressel. I'd like to see a specific breakdown of what he makes compared to all of the Big11Ten. I'll see if I can find that over lunch. According to the CDT, it looks like Paterno is in the bottom third of compensation amongst his conference peers. He could very well make up for this "disparity" with other outside contracts like the one he has with Nike.
Speaking of lunch, I should have the latest Beano Watch done by the end of lunch today.
Just because a reporter at the hometown paper sought to find out the information doesn't mean it is sooooooooo important that we know. Inquiring about this topic seems like a fine use of the reporter's time. As for the money itself, the figure is misleading. For instance, the Wisconsin coach's "base salary" is $400,000, but he gets another $900,000 from "compensation packages and incentives." Basically what I'm saying is: they can make his salary look like just about anything they want.

This $512,644 figure is not his true income. The salary may be $512,644 but he recieved other monies from Penn State that they haven't disclosed.
Like the CEO who only $1.00 a year salary. We all know no one can live on $1.00 a year.

Blue White Roundtable: post-tryptophan
Galen at The Nittany Line asked the questions and I answered them.
It appears that Penn State is a lock for the Alamo Bowl, at this point are you ready to jump on a plane and head to San Antonio or is this game a TiVo moment while you find better things to do like clean the bathroom?
The Alamo Bowl? Really? I've seen otherwise from Scout.com and ESPN
If it is the Alamo Bowl, I'll be at my in-laws, who live near Hershey, so I'll be watching it there. I really thought it'd be the Champs Sports Bowl which would mean watching it from my couch after work.
Bowl game aside, I'd probably rather visit San Antonio than Orlando.
The rumor mill about the vacant Michigan coaching job is just getting started – who do you think ends up the next Skunkbear's head coach?
Les Ferentz
Last week we had your list of the three players that vastly exceeded your preseason expectations, I'm a pessimistic prick (my friends call me captain morale) so name me the three players you had high preseason expectations for that have totally let you down.
Justin King Justin King Justin King
I did not have high expectations for Anthony Morelli, merely some expectations. Austin Scott was simply replaced. I guess Andrew Quarless was disappointing too, but King's regression (at best) was just so huge.
Lightning Round
The BCS is a total mess right now who ends up in the championship game?
Either Mizzou or West Virginia vs. Ohio State will be in the Bad College Stupid championship game. People in Ohio seem convinced it is going to happen.
Will the BCS shakeup this year finally cause coaches to start pushing for some sort of playoff (I'm looking in your direction SEC)?
Maybe a little bit, but it is a moot point for the foreseeable future.
In honor of Black Friday, are you the type of guy that a) Christmas shops early and puts a lot of thought into your gifts b) waits until the last minute and buys whatever's left on the shelf c) gets everything from E-bay & Amazon or d) has a significant other that does all the shopping for you (bonus points if that significant other reads your blog)?
I guess it depends on whether or not the Rose Bowl wants to pick Illinois as the Ohio State replacement, assuming the Buckeyes play for the national title. If they do, then PSU is off to San Antonio.

Beano Watch 11.21.2007
Just because Penn State's regular season is over doesn't mean Carroll H. Coook ('54 Pitt) doesn't have anything to say about them.
Chad Arlington, TX: What is the short term outlook for Coach Paterno and do they (PSU) stay in the family when teh time comes to replace him? SportsNation Beano Cook: I personally said last April that Paterno would coach two more years. I think Tom Bradley would get a crack at being the head coach. People close to Penn State tell me that won't happen, though.
The last part about Tom Bradley not getting a shot is interesting, but because it is Beano sharing the information Bradley ought to be measuring Paterno's office as we speak.
Jeff (PA): Don't you think Penn State and Boston College would be much better fits in the Big East? SportsNation Beano Cook: Boston College made a big mistake leaving the Big East. As for Penn State, it's a state university with tremendous advantages over non-state universities. I think their fans would like to be outside of the Big Ten, but for everyone else involved, I think it's better that they are in it. Most people at Penn State still believe it is a good move. The people who follow BC cannot believe what a stupid move they made to join the ACC.
I don't have an opinion on BC, but Penn State and the Big11Ten is a tired old subject. Like or not, Penn State and the Big11Ten are together for the foreseeable future. Ideally, another eastern team will be added to balance it out someday. Rutgers maybe?
Rutgers is a joke. There's no way the Big "Ten" will take them. The Big "Ten" is a football conference and Rutgers Stadium only holds 35,000. Maryland had to beg and threaten RU to get 3,500 tickets for the MD-RU game which is short of the 4,000 we usually get. Unless Rutgers started playing in the Meadowlands, there's no way they'll even get a 1 for 1 with a Big "Ten" team.
The Big "Ten" will continue to wait for Notre Dame to join the 21st Century and get their team into a football conference. Notre Dame would also be a better fit for the Big "Ten" than the Big Easy. But as long as Notre Dame is subsidized by NBC and the BCS, they'll remain independent.
# posted by Caps Nut :

Rutgers would have to expand to at least 55,000, probably 60,000. The Big11Ten would make them offer 5,000 to other schools. The NY TV market makes Rutgers potentially more attractive than other schools. I'm referring to what I want, not the Big11Ten's. I think Notre Dame is the only one they want too.

Post a CommentPatriot-News catches up on Oregon State rumor - William World News
1. It'll be a week of criticism, so let's at least start off on a positive note. Name three players who have vastly exceeded your pre-season expectations.
Jeremy Boone -- All Big11Ten punter
Rodney Kinlaw -- I didn't think he had a 1,000 yards in him
The offensive line -- not a single player, but seriously, these guys are as solid a line as we've had and none of them were seniors
2. At what point on Saturday did you think that Penn State might be in serious, serious trouble? The fake punt MSU pulled off. Prior to that, I thought Penn State was just bending too much. Then, I knew crazy old Michigan State was more manic than depressive. I guess I was concerned after the Spartans marched down the field on the first drive, but when PSU responded I was thinking expecting something like the Purdue game.
3. What is your explanation for the four consecutive passes that effectively ended Penn State's comeback attempt? What strategy do you think the coaches were going for? RUTS suggested that they were trying to make Anthony Morelli a hero and that is pretty logical, even more so than they just panicked in playcalling.
4. What are your thoughts on a contract extension for Joe Paterno? His current contract expires after the 2008 season. Do you think he'll head into that season with his contract status undetermined? No. They university will extend his contract by no less than two years, probably three. Neither Tim Curley or Graham Spainer is willing to be the guy who "fired" Joe Paterno.
Lightning Round
Which potential bowl opponents are the best and worst possible matchups for Penn State in the Alamo or Champs Sports Bowl? I suppose either Virginia Tech or UVa. are the worst for me since I live in Northern Virginia. I'd have to put up with a lot of grief if the Nittany Lions lost to either of them. Of course, if the Nittany Lions won, it'd be pretty sweet.
If Penn State somehow gets the Alamo Bowl and Kansas or Mizzou falls that far it would be very tough. Overall, I'm not looking that far ahead because there are a few games left to decide conference standings.
Who is going to sneak into the BCS Championship game? Either West Virginia or Ohio State. I figure that the winner of the Kansas vs. Mizzou games loses the Big XII championship. It wouldn't shock me if West Virginia lost because that would mean more work for me with the Buckeyes playing for the title again.
Finally, from BSD, which 2007 Penn State loss was the most difficult to swallow? Michigan -- from the first series on, I was angry. They should have won that game. Illinois was tough too, because there is no way they should have lost, but after the Michigan game, I was already numbed.
Paterno's salary will soon be known - William World News

Paterno's salary will soon be known
Paterno's salary is public, Supreme Court rules - Patriot-News The Patriot-News won its five year long quest to make the salaries of certain Penn State executives (for lack of a better term), including Joe Paterno, public. I've blogged about this before so I'll keep my response simple: greater access to government records is good, but there are probably more important battles to fight than knowing what Paterno makes and the backlash from this may set back Sunshine Laws.
Senior linebacker Dan Connor, junior cornerback Justin King, sophomore punter Jeremy Boone, sophomore defensive end Maurice Evans and junior center A.Q. Shipley were named to the first team.
Connor, Boone and Shipley seem fine on the first team, but what is King doing there? He was a liability out there. Evans should probably be on the second team since he didn't do enough in big games. He's only a sophomore though, so he should only get better and become a big game player too.
2nd team: LB Sean Lee and G Rich Ohrnberger
Honorable mention: T Gerald Cadogan, DE Josh Gaines, RB Rodney Kinlaw and S Anthony Scirrotto
Connor and Kinlaw are the only seniors honored -- everybody else is likely coming back.
Had to give him something award: Anthony Morelli, Sportsmanship winner
This loss is on the defense. Giving up 35 points?! They only times they stopped Michigan State was when they got turnovers which they didn't even necessarily cause. When was the last time the defense had such a bad half?
It was good to see Sean Lee finally get an interception though.
The schemes leave too much open space in the middle of the field.
The MSU fake punt was the play of the game.
I loved PSU's fake field goal, but that may have fired up the Spartans a little.
Was it just me or was their a quick shot of John L. Smith in the stands?
Anthony Morelli played pretty well and had no turnovers.
The last five PSU play calls were very poor. They got desperate.
Another good game by Rodney Kinlaw.
Brent Carter played well in his short relief of Kinlaw.
This wasn't Jeremy Boone's best day of punting.
Pretty good performance by the offensive line. They should be quite an asset next season.
How did the secondary get so bad?
That 15 play drive in the first half was wonderful. When was the last time Penn State had a 15 play drive against Big11Ten competition?
Penn State somehow shutout Temple, 31-0 in Philadelphia.
THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: MICHIGAN STATE
You throw the records out when the Land Grant Trophy is on the line. Michigan State is 6-5 and looking for another win to guarantee a bowl berth. With new coach Marc Dantonio at the helm, they've been competitive in every game they have played, but couldn't get over the hump. They have a better offense than defense too.
It doesn't seem like it, but Penn State has owned Michigan State since joining the Big11Ten. The Nittany Lions have a 11-3 record with all of those loses coming at Spartan Stadium. On two occasions, 1997 and 2003, the losses were blowouts.
RANKING
#22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll; first team in "Also receiving votes" for AP.
PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
Here is the official Intercollegiate Athletics transcript of Tuesday's Joe Paterno press conference.
The game is on ABC in Big11Ten country (except Iowa), New York/New Jersey and a few parts of New England. In other parts of the nation, the game is on ESPN.
PREDICTIONS
This is hard, because you never know what Michigan State team is going to show up. You do know what Penn State team will show up on the road though -- lethargic with very conservative play-calling. Of course, it may not be as bad since it isn't a noon start. Then again, Michigan State is playing to clinch a bowl game since six wins may not be enough in the Big11Ten this season. Of course, when Penn State was really bad in the early 2000s, they eliminated the Spartans a few times. In other words -- I'm hedging. So, who will win? Well, I'm afraid I'll have to go with the home team, let's say a 23-14 loss for Penn State. :(
I'll go with Michigan State by two touchdowns, 30-16, marking a disappointing end to an extremely mediocre season (not counting a worthless trip to the Champs Sports Bowl).

These "big uglies" know how to and like to eat. Best of all, T Dennis Landolt, a redshirt junior, is bulking up with PBJ sammiches:
"He probably eats more peanut-butter sandwiches than I previously thought was humanly possible," Ohrnberger said. "He literally takes the cake."
Guard Mike Lucian, a steady witness to Landolt's eating exploits, corroborated that account.
"If you go in Dennis' room there [are] loaves of whole wheat bread and jars of peanut butter," Lucian said. "He eats at least seven to 10 [sandwiches] every night."

Another OSU game for Penn State? Royster and coverage map too
OSU could be headed to Penn State - Gazette-Times, Corvalis, Oregon There are pretty strong rumors indicating that Penn State will host Oregon State next season -- Beavers visiting Beaver Stadium. That would be a MAJOR upgrade to the schedule, so hopefully this will occur. Perhaps Intercollegiate Athletics is figuring out that people don't want to pay gobs of money to see Coastal Carolina and Arkansas State.
Also, Evan Royster's ankle injury (The Collegian) does not seem as severe as originally, so he may play on Saturday.
The ABC coverage map (PDF) for Saturday's games are out too. Basically Big11Ten country except Iowa, New York/New Jersey and a few markets in New England gets Penn State vs. Michigan State on ABC. Otherwise, check one of the ESPN channels.
I think NY/NJ does get the PSU game according to the map - it's all green. Not that I have a huge desire to even watch the game after this week's events.

Post a CommentBeano Watch 11.14.2007 - William World News
Beano Watch 11.14.2007
Carroll H. Cook spent about an hour yesterday badmouthing Penn State's schedule which sadly, is nothing we haven't done. Occasionally, he answered a question without resorting to that rhetoric.
Joe: Beano, Whats Penn State's problem? I know you hate them and all, but what needs to happen for them to get out of the second tier of the big 10? SportsNation Beano Cook: I do not hate Penn State, let's get that straight. And I do not have an answer for them. They get material, but the big difference, is that since they have joined the Big Ten they are playing other big state universities that can put students in very easy classroom programs.
While the Big11Ten is tougher than their independent days, I think the problems aren't the conference, but the way the program is being run. At least the offensive line is improving.
Bill ( Sydney, Australia ): Does JoePa passes Bobby Bowden by the end of this season? SportsNation Beano Cook: He is now 1 game behind, and assuming both will be in bowl games, I think he will eventually overtake Bowden. But the only reason I think JoePa will eventually overcome Bowden is because Penn State plays an easy non-conference schedule.
I think Paterno never feel behind Bowden and his Samford wins, but the NCAA does so look for Paterno to take back his all-time lead. I think it has more to do with Paterno being a better coach right now and really, over time with Bowden. I think JoePa is 8-1 over Bowden.
Keith(Columbus): Beano, Will Notre Dame and Ohio State ever meet in the reg. season again. I know when they sign a long term deal with Mich, this hurt the chances. I doubt. N.D. would want to play both in the same year.
SportsNation Beano Cook: I don't think either team wants to play, but I think ND would play OSU before OSU would play ND. Ohio State and Penn State just do not want to play tough non-conference games.
This is an odd statement coming given that Penn State and Notre Dame just played a home-and-home.
Marc (Philly): Dont forget those Bowden victories that really shouldnt be counted to begin with. Stop bashing Joe and Penn State. You are so transparent! SportsNation Beano Cook: I do not make the rules I what games count, but I happen to agree with you that those games should probably not count. But they do count and there is nothing anyone can do about it. And do not worry since Joe Pa will end up with more wins anyway.
Didn't I just say that?
sarah (chicago): "Ohio State and Penn State just do not want to play tough non-conference games." Sorry Beano you are wrong. OSU played Texas, plays USC next year and has plans to play Miami(FL). SportsNation Beano Cook: Ohio State has four non-conference games. Tell me about the other three. I have no complaint with Washington, but the other three, Youngtown St., Akron and Kent St.? Give me a break! They play one tough one. With the material they get they should be willing to play tough games. The BCS has made a lot of teams play easy non-conference games. There are exceptions like USC and Washington. My point is this, Penn State and Ohio State get great material so they should play tougher non-conference games, and that is just my opinion.
He is absolutely right.
John North Bergen, NJ: Penn State refuses to play WVU or Pitt on a 1 for 1 bases. They believe it should be 2 at Penn State for 1 road game. That's why they play Temple, and the Akrons of the world. SportsNation Beano Cook: That's a policy they can choose to have, but there are other teams they can choose to play.
A surprisingly civil answer to the world's most annoying topic, Penn State vs. Pitt. I'm so sick of hearing about Pitt not being afraid to play at Penn State twice for every game at Pitt. Look up the history of the series and see where most of the games were played for the first 70 years of rivalry and then we'll talk fairness. Beano also talked about Handsome Dan, the original mascot. Unfortunately, it only came up from Georgia derivative Uga mascot and well, got kind of creepy.
Brent (Atlanta): Beano- fire out something about the Dawgs. Will they beat LSU in the Georgia Dome if they get the chance? are they a top 3 team to start next year?
SportsNation Beano Cook: I think they have a good shot, if they make it. It is a home game for Georgia and Uga will be there. What more do you need? I would love to see USC play Georgia so we could have Uga and the Song Girls. But Uga's the greatest.
Dave (Palo Alto): Uga, what about Handsome Dan?
SportsNation Beano Cook: Hey Georgia are called the Bulldogs because of Yale. So yes Handsome Dan is a very good mascot. Maybe we could fix the two of them up on a blind date. It could be a heck of a halftime show. Very good question by the way!
1. Why did Temple make our defense look like another MAC team in the first half?
The usual, noon start, road game, etc. I also think Temple caught Penn State off guard with their aggressiveness.
2. Should Penn State burn Stephfon Green's redshirt if Evan Royster is inactive for this week?
No, line up Derrick Williams in the backfield 5 to 10 times. The difference between the Alamo and Champs Sports Bowls is not worth burning a redshirt.
3. Right now it's looking like Penn State will end up in either the Outback Bowl against an SEC opponent or the Alamo Bowl against a Big XII team. Which possible matchup looks the most intriguing to you?
I think the Alamo Bowl is the best case scenario and right now Texas is fourth in the Big XII. Not knowing much about them, I'll have to say that it would be good to renew this intersectional matchup. If by some reason Penn State makes the Outback Bowl, Florida would be a great challenge and Tennessee would be fun to kick around again, though I'd have to favor the Vols in that matchup. Wait, who am I kidding, I'd have to favor almost anyone playing Penn State. If Penn State falls to the Champs Sports Bowl, I'm pretty happy with whomever they play.
4. Was Ohio State's loss to Illinois a good thing or bad thing for the Big Ten?
Ohio State losing was a bad thing because it puts Michigan in position to win the conference outright this Saturday. Aside from disliking that program and Lloyd Carr, it is pretty embarrassing to have the conference champion be a team that lost to a I-AA school. OSU's loss also made it less likely that Penn State will play in the Outback Bowl.
Lightning Round
What was up with the bizarre quarterback rotation at the end of the Temple game?
I figured it was a way of announcing that it will be an open competition for quarterback next season.
It's Michigan State, and technically rivalry week. How bad do you want to beat the Spartans? Make me feel the hate.
Sorry, I can't do it. Despite some good games with Michigan State over the years, I can't hate them. Let me just say that I'm really sick of hearing about Pitt too.
Evan Royster is likely not going to be playing in Penn State's finale at Michigan State. He hurt his ankle in the Temple game after one carry. The depth chart is pretty thin:
Rodney Kinlaw Brent Carter
There is talk of using Stephfon Green, who has been redshirting this season, but with the Alamo Bowl the best case scenario, it doesn't seem worth it to me.
WR Derrick Williams ought to get some snaps at tailback. See, problem solved.
Unless they are playing for the national title, there is no reason that Royster should be rushed back for any bowl game.
I like your Derrick Williams solution. This might free up some more passes for Deon Butler as well.

I wish that someone would explain why DWill hasn't lined up in the backfield at all - wasn't the kid a quarterback in high school? In the olden days PSU used to run a halfback pass every now and then - sometimes it even worked - and it was always exciting.

Post a CommentPenn State Football 2007- Temple Game Story - William World News
I expected a different final score than this one and had Temple not self destructed deep in Penn State territory three times, including on their first two possessions, it would have been a very different game.
Temple marched up and down the field on its first two possessions, picking the Nittany Lions apart and finding themselves in excellent position to score. The first time they shanked field goal from about 20 yards out. The second time, they dropped a pass in the endzone on a fake field goal right in front of our seats. The receiver had his back to us, so we though Temple scored. Temple also fumbled on a reverse. They just made so many crazy mistakes.
Anthony Morelli was pretty effective throwing the ball, especially into the corner of the endzone. Three TDs on teh same right corner fade pattern; two to Jordan Norwood, one to Deon Butler.
The bad Morelli news was his fumble at the Temple 1 and a simply horrible interception in the second half. Did he know we were wearing white?
Rodney Kinlaw had a great game, rushing for 168 yards to exceed 1,000 for the season. Who knew?
The defense allowed a few long drives, but held Temple to 4 net yards on the ground and no points of course. That being said, it was still a sloppy outing for them. They may not beat Michigan State if they play that way.
Dan Connor had some great take down tackles.
Sean Lee missed another interception. I think he has hooves instead of hands.
I was disappointed when Penn State only rushed nine with Temple punting out of their own end zone.
Derrick Williams had over 100 yards receiving. He has been playing better of late.
Penn State fans easily outnumbered Temple fans. It wasn't even close. Total attendace: 69,029, a new record for a MAC team at home.
The video board briefly showed a bundled-up Bill Cosby, a Temple grad. RUN THE T-BONE!
Joe Paterno owns Temple -- 24-0.
Good to see the Blue Band march during half time. They performed most of the pregame other than Rock N' Roll.
Temple should be decent next year, perhaps even a winning team. They have improved a lot over last year although it wasn't reflected in the score.
Back-up quarterbacks Daryl Clark and Pat Devlin alternated on every play late in the game. Translation: open competition for next year's starting job.
I'll have more to say about trip throughout the week.
I'm sorry we missed you this weekend! I didn't see the comment until after the game :(
We had a good tailgate - albeit short. We didn't tailgate after the game but we were home around 4 pm - which was the oddest thing.
Oh, and I saw 2 missed interceptions by Lee - that poor kid.

I am not sure about your Clark/Devlin open competition. Devlin is from near Philadelphia. So, Joe played him. Joe also insisted that Pinchek be in the game at the end (#39) because he is also from around Philly.

Penn State came back from an early deficit to beat Purdue, 26-19.
THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: TEMPLE
Temple is well, Temple only less so this season. Before their starting quarterback got hurt, they were making some noise in the MAC. They are still a year away from doing much damage there, so don't get too worried. They can't run the ball at all, though their defense isn't bad.
This is Temple's biggest home game ever with over 70,000 expected to attend the game at Lincoln Financial Field. We'll be there, in the rain, too.
Temple also has switched to some really ugly uniforms. They had the right idea last year.
RANKING
#25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
Here is the official Intercollegiate Athletics transcript of Tuesday's Joe Paterno press conference.
The game is on ESPNU at noon. You probably don't get that channel unless you have a dish or an expanded sports tier.
PREDICTIONS
Temple plays with fire and passion and keep themselves in the game through the first half, but Penn State's superior athletes and depth rule the day. Penn State 41 Temple 17
For the second week in a row, Carroll H. Cook ('54 Pitt) answered no specific questions about my alma mater. In fact, in the one question that included Penn State, he avoided including them in the answer. At least he made a Casablanca reference, but forgot to mention that Julius Epstein, a Penn Stater, was one of the screenwriters.
Next week, we need send him some Penn State questions.
Blue White Roundtable: Going to Temple on Saturday - William World News
Blue White Roundtable: Going to Temple on Saturday
I asked the questions this week:
1.) Please elaborate on whether you come away from the Purdue game encouraged or discouraged about the Nittany Lions?
With the exception of the kickoff coverage, I'm encouraged by the Nittany Lions victory. They overcame a typical sluggish start, didn't panic and kept Purdue out of the endzone the rest of the game. Yes, it did take a minor miracle from Sean Lee (fumble at the goal line) but after that Penn State did what it had to do to win. The play calling was quite good too. They also benefited from some mental lapses by Purdue and some poor officiating.
2.) Who was a better linebacker at this point in their junior seasons, Sean Lee, Dan Connor or Paul Posluszny?
This is a tough one because you can't go wrong with any of them. I would have to give it to Posluszny though, he was more dominant and scared more people than Lee or Connor. Posluszny simply had the complete all-around package too.
3.) How much of a fight do you expect Temple to put up since this their biggest home game in forever-and-a-day? Does Temple (3-6) have a shot at winning? Are you going to be at the game in Philadelphia?
I expect Temple to put up quite a fight in the first half; they will be going hard on every play and playing with focus. I don't see them being in awe of the Nittany Lions and they should be extra motivated since their coach, Al Golden, is a former Penn Stater. That being said, I full expect Penn State to win by at least two touchdowns simply because of superior athletes and depth. Temple will be gassed by the third quarter and Penn State will break away then. The only way Temple can win is if Penn State turns the ball over a lot, a possibility, particularly with bad weather.
I'll be at the game in section 105, having apparently overpaid for tickets months ago. That's okay because the game is closer to where I live than State College; up and down I-95 and no Port Matilda or Lewistown Narrows! I may finally crash visit the 2theLiontailgate too. By the way, if you don't have tickets, there may still be some available.
Lightning round
Are you a fan of the Patriot-News sportswriter videos?
I really enjoy watching Bob Flounders playing the straightman to Dave Jones. When Nick Horvath, Jr. replaces Jones, the energy level goes way down though.
Which basketball team will have a better season, the men or the women?
I think the men will hae a better year, just because Rene Portland left the cubbard kind of bare.
Do you wear a Penn State jersey to games? If so, what number and why?
I wear a blue #11 for home games and white #12 on the road. I've always liked #11 and was pleased when LaVar Arrington made #11 a hot jersey. My jersey is a Russell Athletic with tackle twill numbers bought for me from Lion's Pride for Christmas in 1999 (thanks Mom & Dad!). I bought my #12 in summer 2001 for about $10 on the clearance rack at UBC, along with a blue #12 and #20 (which my wife wore until I bought her a woman's cut #31). I would like a white #11.
Prior to those jerseys, I wore blue #14 (my Todd Blackledge jersey) and white #43. I really shouldn't wear numbers higher than #19 though, because they are too big on me.
Check out how the the others answered the questions:
Penn State Nittany Lions 26 Purdue Boilermakers 19
Overall I was pleased with Penn State's victory on Saturday. Despite falling behind early, they toughened up on defense and didn't panic on offense, giving them a chance to come back. Anthony Morelli had turnover free game too, who'd of thunk?
OLB Sean Lee striping the ball and recovering the fumble was the play of the game. Had he not done that Penn State would have had to come back from 14 down, an insurmountable feat.
I'm pleased to see that Evan Royster is now the feature back, he has a bright future ahead of him.
Although it seemed like Purdue dominated at times on offense, they didn't get a single touchdown.
CB Justin King had a mixed day, instead of simply an awful one. Progress!
The officiating was awful, even by Big11Ten standards. The play that had Joe Tiller holding his nose and pointing at the officials (anybody have a screengrab?) was a valid personal foul though. Some of the others were iffy, but on the whole consistent. The Purdue receiver stepping out of bounds and the clock still running baffled me.
Welcome back, Derrick Williams.
Another solid game by Dan Connor on Senior Day; 11 tackles for the all-time Penn State record.
I wasn't there, so who got the loudest cheers during pregame introductions? How was Morelli treated.
Unlike some bad announcers, I was able to tune out the two this week very quickly.
Why do people drool over Erin Andrews? She's got great hair, but is only average looking.
I didn't do a pregame and the postgame is three days after the fact -- I'll try to do better next time. I haven't even toasted the victory yet, but will when I get home from work.
An Intercollegiate Athleticsprofile of Brad "Spider" Caldwell, the equipment manager for Penn State football. You may have seen him introducing the Penn State players during the ABC broadcast of the Notre Dame game this season.
I was going to name this post "Spider Caldwell, Spider Caldwell, does whatever a Spider Caldwell does" but even someone as arrhythmic as me knows the meter is way off on that Spider-Man song parody.
The Maryland Bureau Chief is wondering if he missed the Beano Chat. I think what actually happened is Carroll H. Cook ('54 Pitt) missed Penn State. There were only two acknowledgments of Penn State's existence this week, both in reference to other teams beating them. He didn't even criticize Penn State's schedule or tendency to secrecy.
Depending on your take of Beano, this could be good or bad news.
1. After being embarrassed by Ohio State at home, where does Penn State's program as a whole go from here? The program goes on about its business, uninterested in changing anything. That isn't what I want to happen, but it is what will happen. Oh and neither Daryl Clark or Pat Devlin will see many snaps at QB.
2. Following back to back poor performances, what do you see as Penn State's biggest problem on defense?
It is hard to say whether the line or secondary is the biggest problem. Both have injuries, but I think the line is bigger problem. Having trouble stopping the run or apply pressure to the quarterback is harder to deal with than poor secondary play.
3. What happens against Purdue this Saturday?
A lethargic Nittany Lions offense goes three and out on its first possession. They rebound though and win. The offense wasn't that bad last week and I expect it to perform well enough to win. I also expect the defense to bounce back and play up to its standards.
Lightning Round:
What bowl game does Penn State end up in?
Alamo
Who is going to be Penn State's next verbal commitment?
Stefen Djordjevic. Really I don't know, recruiting isn't my thing.
Let's hope that the obnoxious frat boys (Run Up the Score!)who were rude enough to throw beers at Ohio State fans and then stupid enough to put video of it on YouTube are charged with assault. They embarrass the entire university and diminish the value of my degree.
Look for a worthless press release from bad behavior-enabling IFC any day now, followed by a Collegian letter from some frat loser who argues that we should ignore frats bad behavior because of THON.
DAVID JONES - PSU picture won't be improving soon - The Post Jones lays out why Penn State is probably going to be nothing more than a 8-9 win team as long as Paterno is around. I think he is correct.
I have to admit that was one of Jones better columns. He relied on facts and statistics, rather than injecting his own bias against PSU. The fact that many people are moving south in this country certainly hurts. Only a change in PSU recruiting philosophy will help.
I will disagree with one point he made--I'm not sure you need an NFL-caliber QB to win in college. Spurrier was wildly successful in college becuase of his "system" QBs. Look at Oklahoma early in this decade--no NFL-caliber QBs. There was Troy Smith last year who made the national title game. The list goes on. You just need a good athlete and someone with a burning desire to win.

Penn State at Temple a noon kickoff on ESPNU
Penn State-Temple Football Game Set for 12:00 p.m. Kick on ESPNU - Intercollegiate Athletics Penn State's trip to Philly gets a noon kickoff and "national" broadcast on ESPNU. An earlier release said it will also air on Philly's 6ABC, but the one I have linked to doesn't say that so that information may have been incorrect.
Six years ago Saturday, a new tradition began -- victory bourbon. The genesis for came the week before when Penn State came back to beat Northwestern in the final minute. When asked about the game, Joe Paterno offered that "This was a great football game. I'm going to go home, get into trouble with a good stiff bourbon, then watch Ohio State tapes." Following that, I've toasted to every Penn State victory with a good stiff bourbon. I was hoping that the anniversary could be celebrated, but alas the Nittany Lions, specifically the defense, couldn't oblige. They must have been looking ahead to Purdue.
This loss belongs to the defense more than anyone else. When was the last time you could say that about Penn State? 2003 maybe? It is so unusual for Tom Bradley to have a team so unprepared.
The defensive line showed its youth, finally. One lousy sack and run all over all night long.
Granted, Ohio State is good, really good. Not in a scare you to death kind of way, just in a "get the job done efficiently and go home" way. They owned the line of scrimmage on offense.
MLB Dan Connor may have had 18 tackles, but he was falling backwards to make every one of them.
The secondary is officially very overrated. CB Justin King has been exposed. He'll be lucky to even get honorable mention in conference honors.
On the other side of the ball, Penn State wasn't bad. They had a great drive to start the game and were not intimidated or beaten back. They just couldn't get it done.
Anthony Morelli was solid until his blizzards fourth quarter interception. The last interception was the I worst I had seen since a #14 in black and gold played against Dallas.
The offensive line was decent; they have been a pleasant surprise this season.
As I expected, the Buckeyes were completely unfazed by the crowd.
A.J. Wallace had the second kickoff return TD for Penn State since I started following the team. The other, by Larry Johnson in 2000, also came in a loss.
In 2005, fans were beligerant to Ohio State. Not as much this time, the Lot 11 atmosphere was not bad at all either.
I helped jump an Ohio State fan's car. No good deed goes unpunished. Why do people always come to me looking for jumper cables anyway? That's the second time this month.
Speaking of Lot 11, I still think I'm idling as I wait to get out of it.
There were several terrible defensive performances in 2003, and you are right, nothing like that since. The defense hasn't always played lights out, but it had not ever been the main culprit for a loss since then.
This "Justin King is a first rounder" stuff needs to stop. His play has never warranted the status. I blame the media more for it than anything else.
I'm still stunned that OSU didn't need the punter.

I only have three points/observations to make about Saturday's game:
1) We provided a jump, too, to an Ohio State person.
2) It took us 2 hours to get out of Lot 12.
3) Fire Tom Bradley.

I think we need to address the following question: Which highly talented high school player has been the biggest flop at PSU--Anthony Morelli or Austin Scott?
I wouldn't fire Bradley, at least not yet. PSU typically struggles with the mobile quarterbacks (see Indiana and Illinois) but he has done so much "right" that I don't want to see him go just yet.
Now Galen Hall and Jay Paterno? That's a different matter....

Well, I'm more inclined to just scrap the entire staff and start fresh. I think we need it. I mean, the "up-the-middle, up-the-middle, up-the-middle, punt" mentality just needs to go, period. Again, Appalachian State and Oregon had a field day with Michigan's secondary, and we didn't even attempt to go there. Does anybody look at the tape anymore?
Yay, Alamo Bowl, here we come!

Noon kickoff next week - William World News
Noon kickoff next week
Next week's game against Purdue will start at noon (Intercollegiate Athletics). ESPN will broadcast the game nationally.
I can't say I am terribly inclined to make the trip next week; too much time stuck in Lot 11 post-game will do that to you.
Penn State finally won on the road, defeating Indiana 36-31.
THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
Generally speaking, Ohio State's bi-annual visits to Beaver Stadium are the games I typically look foward to the most. Most of the games since '95 have been nailbiters with high stakes. It seems typical for one of the teams to be undefeated heading into the game; the last three years, Ohio State has had that distinction. My favorite all-time Beaver Stadium game was the 1997 matchup with the Buckeyes, a 31-27 thriller.
This year's edition of the Buckeyes has found itself at #1 after starting much lower. An undefeated season and a series of upsets have pushed Ohio State to the top spot. They spent most of last year there before getting throttled by Florida in the BCS title game. Since 2005, the Buckeyes have not been defeated in the regular season with their 2005 trip to Happy Valley being last blemish.
This year, they have a stout defense, ranked #1 in many categories and consistant offensive attack led by Todd Boeckman, a prototypical Buckeye quarterback. He makes good decisions and manages the game -- Joe Paterno woudl love to have someone behind center like Boeckman. Sophomore Chris Wells leads the Buckeye ground attack and appears to be the next great tailback in Columbus. Brian Robeskie, Terry's son, is the leading wide receiver.
Essentially, Ohio State is team with good athletes that plays good, fundamental football. They have not been challenged significantly though.
This is a tough one. Ohio State has better stats, barely, and more wins, but hasn't really been challenged. Penn State has been challenged and was bloodied. The atmosphere at Beaver Stadium will not intimidate the Buckeyes as much as a lot of Penn Staters think. However, being the underdog will probably spur the Nittany Lions to play a little looser since they have less at stake. I think that will be the difference, Penn State wins 16-13 in a battle punts..
Carroll H. Cook ('54 Pitt) chatted about Penn State's battle with Ohio State thsi weekend. Actually, he mostly chatted about how much he dislikes their schedules.
SportsNation Beano Cook: (3:02 PM ET ) Good afternoon, we now have 6 weeks to go and we will then know who will be in the BCS. My first pick was LSU against Penn State. With Penn State out I now pick Oklahoma. LSU still wins. I won last week with my pick. I am now at 3-5. Three in a row!
Had to remind us, didn't you Beano?
Bryan (College Park): What game are you most looking forward to this weekend?
SportsNation Beano Cook: (3:03 PM ET ) Well I would say Ohio State at Penn State more than any other game because I am from Pittsburgh!
Wow, what trenchant insight from a true college football historian.
Lou (Bethesda, MD): Beano, you rail against the Big Ten schedules each week, but never propose a solution for it. So, with no bye weeks and no games after Thanksgiving, how do you propose the teams find non-"disgraceful" games to play.
SportsNation Beano Cook: (3:23 PM ET ) I think it is crazy that they do not play after Thanksgiving. Ohio State used to do it. I was there, I saw it. The Big Ten should play non-conference games, and the season should not end until the first week of December, unless November has 5 weekends of football.
This leads to a clarification:
Pete (Chicago) : The Big Ten doesn't play after Thanksgiving because Michigan and Ohio State insist that there cannot be any Big ten games played after theirs.
SportsNation Beano Cook: I never heard that. I am not saying it is not true, but I have never heard that. But I do not think they have that kind of power.
It probably is true.
Brian (madison): Beano, I disagree with your comment that big ten teams are reluctant to play tough non-conference games. Didn't Ohio State play highly ranked Texas the last two years? OSU plays USC in '08 and '09.
SportsNation Beano Cook: (3:49 PM ET ) Thats is one game out of four. This year, they played Washington. Look at the other three non-conference games they played this year. I balme the philosophy of the university, and Penn State is the same way. Now I do not expect the same tough schedules out of Indiana, but I do expect at least two tough non-conference games out of Penn State and Ohio State.
Ah taking a shot at Penn State's schedule again. What is that, 8 weeks in a row. Have anything to say about the game Beano? No?
He does redeem himself a little:
Chad (Savannah, GA): Actually Beano Grambling St. has thte best band in the country. Ohio St. has the best band tradition in the country with thte dotting of the i.
SportsNation Beano Cook: You are probably right. Grambling is very good.
SportsNation Beano Cook: I also like the bands in the Ivy league!
SportsNation Beano Cook: The Yale band is always a treat to see, disorganized, but still very entertaining!
Yes, the Yale Precision Marching Band does put on quite a show. The last time I saw them perform, they burnt a Harvard flag. Now THAT is a rivalry.
Flounders doesn't seem as excited doing these previews with Horvath as he does with Jones. It seems like working with Jones brings him down to a more juvenile level or something. That said, I didn't miss Jones as well.
Incidentally, what was Jones doing that is more important than the Penn State preview? Its not like Harrisburg Senators were playing...

1) Will the loss of Hahn and/or Odrick have a big impact on either the offense in Hahn's case, or the defense in Odrick's case?
This hard to say because fullbacks have not been a big part of Penn State's offense for some time now. The defensive line seems to be doing an alright to excellent job regardless of who is in there, so I'm going to say we'll miss Matt Hahn more -- he was having the game of his life before he got injured and was making a strong case to be included more.
2) Has Anthony Morelli redeemed himself in your eyes?
He's had two really bad games this year, some decent ones, but not a breakout one. Much like Luke Skywalker needing to defeat Darth Vader to become a jedi, Morelli needs to beat a higher ranked team to get out of the doghouse.
3) Is the offensive play calling where you want it to be now or do we still need help?
The playcalling has been better, but I think they have to start throwing to the tight ends. A dink and dunk attack is almost as good as a strong running game. They also have to keep calling plays in the second half the way they do in the first.
LIGHTNING ROUND
Are you lucky enough to have scored tickets this week?
Yes. Someone I bought tickets from six years ago has always kept me in her "we can't go to these games" preseason emails. Within five minutes of her offering these tickets (in SEU, 80s!) this August, I had already replied and gotten a confirmation that I "won" them. Bless her.
Which Ohio State offensive player scares you the most?
Brian Robeskie I guess. His dad is a wide receivers coach in the NFL and briefly led the Redskins after they fired Norv Turner. Robeskie is the best they've got.
For the game Saturday are you : giddy, apprehensive, or on suicide watch?
Giddy. I don't' have any strong feelings yet on the outcome, I'm just excited to be going at this point. I might be more excited if I hadn't messed up my left leg playing flag football though.

Jones: Ohio State is a flawed #1
DAVID JONES - Buckeyes are a flimsy No. 1 - Patriot-News Jones, who cries when the Ohio State alma mater is played, thinks Ohio State might be a paper tiger. I hold the same suspucsion, but worry that Penn State is a flimsy #24.
Oh great, Pittsburgh writers like Ron Cook of the Post-Gazetteare jumping on the bandwagon. If Penn State loses, they'll jump off it with columns denouncing the university as whole. If Penn State wins, they'll whine about not playing Pitt Temple West.
As always, Blue White Roundtable will appear a little bit after noon.
