Penn State: Blue White Game on ESPN2

ESPN2 To Air Blue-White Game Presented by AAA - Intercollegiate Athletics
In a first, the Blue White Game, the Nittany Lions' annual spring scrimmage will be televised nationally. "Kickoff" is 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24.

Frankly, the biggest appeal of the Blue White Game is the tailgating in a more "relaxed" environment, but if I am not up there, I'll probably turn it on.

What a relief, no more Anita Marks commercials!

Anita Marks and CBS Radio part ways - The Wash. Examiner
Excellent news -- Anita Marks has been let go of her radio gig and thus her MASN affiliation. We never need to see another ad implying (incorrectly) that she's hot and we should listen/watch. Phew!

Big Ten Network should have a bands show

Both bands
I've got a programming idea for the Big Ten Network -- Big Ten Bands, a weekly showcase of Big Ten marching bands. Each week the program would show at least one march from all of the bands performing at home games that week. The show should also feature profiles of band members, traditions and more. I'd watch it.

MASN to show all Nats games in HD - William World News
Monday, December 07, 2009

MASN to show all Nats games in HD

MASN (Malevolent Angelos Sports Network) is putting all of the Washington Nationals 2010 games in HD. This is a rare sign of competence from the inept, anti-Nats/DC network owned and operated by Peter Angelos. Gutless MLB Commissioner Bud Selig agreed to a corrupt bargain with Angelos just before the 2005 season to avoid a lawsuit. Angelos of course voted against baseball's return to D.C. because he is a coward who mistakenly believes Washington and Baltimore are the same market. Angelos then kept the Nats off of most area cable systems until September 2006, costing the Nats two years of exposure to the greater D.C. area. It stifled the fanbase and hurt the District of Columbia's investment in Nationals Park. Once the Nats were available, Angelos continued his bad faith by making network Baltimore-centric and treating the Nats as the secondary team. The network is prone to technical incompetence. Keep all of this in mind if you are tempted to buy tickets to Angelos' Orioles -- you don't want to reward bad behavior do you?

The news was apparently supposed to be embargoed until today, but Rob Dibble showed his is as good as keeping secrets as he is broadcasting by tweeting about it it on Friday afternoon. I wish I had gotten to post this sooner, I dont' want any of you thinking I'm respecting a MASN embargo.

College Football TV maps: Week 12 - The Post
Most of the nation will get Penn State at Michigan State on ABC. The only part of the country getting the game on ESPN is ACC country -- basically Washington D.C. down to the Florida panhandle.

By the way, the 126th edition of The Game is on Vs. at noon as Yale hosts Harvard at Yale Bowl.

Penn State football 2009 TV schedule finalized; MSU at 3:30

Penn State-Michigan State Season Finale To Kick At 3:30 p.m. on ABC/ESPN - Intercollegiate Athletics
Not surprisingly, Penn State's annual regular season finale against Michigan State gets a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on the ESPN family of networks. Here is the remaining schedule:

11/14/2009 INDIANA 12:00 p.m. Big Ten Network
11/21/2009 at Michigan State 3:30 p.m. ABC/ESPN/ESPN2
The coverage map will likely be available on Wednesday, November 18.

I think almost all of games between the two teams since 1993 have been 3:30 kickoffs. For a while, it was given that kickoff time before the season began. This year's matchup is in East Lansing. Penn State currently holds the Land Grant Trophy.

Monday, November 02, 2009

Penn State football TV schedule as of 11.02.2009; Indiana at noon

Penn State-Indiana Senior Day Clash To Kick At 12 p.m. on Big Ten Network - Intercollegiate Athletics
Penn State's penultimate regular season game, against Indiana, will be a noon kickoff and televised by Big Ten Network. That is also the final home game of the year -- Senior Day.

For a while there I was thinking it might get picked up by the ESPN family of networks, but Indiana's had a year of tough losses. Again.

11/07/2009 OHIO STATE 3:30 p.m. ABC/ESPN2
11/14/2009 INDIANA 12:00 p.m. Big Ten Network
11/21/2009 at Michigan State TBA
Still no word on the final game of the year, but I think it is a solid bet that it will be picked up by ESPN and given the 3:30 p.m. timeslot.

Look for this week's coverage map on Wednesday evening.

Penn State-Ohio State Clash Set for ABC/ESPN National Telecast - Intercollegiate Athletics
I think I was telling my wife yesterday that today we'd find out officially that ABC or ESPN would be covering the November 7, Penn State vs. Ohio State game at 3:30 p.m. Sure enough that's what has happened. It will either be on ABC or ESPN2, depending on what part of the country you are in, coverage maps to come on Wednesday, November 4.Here is the remaining schedule

10/31/2009 at Northwestern 4:30 p.m. ESPN or ESPN2
11/07/2009 OHIO STATE 3:30 p.m. ABC/ESPN2
11/14/2009 INDIANA TBA
11/21/2009 at Michigan State TBA
As I noted on 2009 Penn State football schedule as of 04.16.2009 there are no longer night games in November in the Big Ten.

I expect the Michigan State game to get a ABC/ESPN telecast and a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. The Indiana game may wind up on Big Ten Network.

Look for this week's coverage map on Wednesday evening.

Penn State vs. Iowa gets ESPN College Gameday

ESPN's College GameDay To Originate from Penn State This Weekend - Intercollegiate Athletics
Once again, ESPN College Gameday is coming to Penn State. On Saturday morning. the show will broadcast live from University Park (but they'll call it State College). Apparently there is a movement for students to hold up plain white posters to show the "white out" which reminds me of the remark that there is a "fine line between stupid and clever." I guess we'll find out which is which.

It seems to early in the season for a Gameday appearance, but I know Kirk Herbstreit will be pleased because he loves the Penn State student section. He is also doing the color commentary on the telecast which probably influenced the decision to have the show there.

I'm not a regular watcher of Gameday, since I'm usually doing other stuff, especially since I have a son now. I'll try to peak in though because there will surely a feature on Penn State that there normally would not be -- I'm predicting that will either be Daryll Clark, Sean Lee or Jerome Hayes.

Updated 2009 Penn State football TV schedule; Illinois game at 3:30 - William World News

Updated 2009 Penn State football TV schedule; Illinois game at 3:30

We have a kickoff time announcement for Penn State's first road game of the 2009 season. Actually, we just have some tweets (thanks PSUGirl!) and an updated schedule on the Intercollegiate Athletics site.

The Nittany Lions will face the University of Illinois Fighting Illini at 3:30 p.m on October 3. The game will be telecast by ABC or ESPN, depending on where you live. It is probably safe to say that Pennsylvania and Illinois will get the game on their local ABC stations.

I think this is good news for the Nittany Lions. To say they have been lethargic in noon games on the road in the central time zone would be an understatement.

09/26/2009 IOWA* 8:00 p.m. ESPN or ABC
10/03/2009 at Illinois 3:30 p.m. ABC or ESPN
10/10/2009 EASTERN ILLINOIS
10/17/2009 MINNESOTA** 3:30 p.m. ABC/ESPN/ESPN2
10/24/2009 at Michigan
10/31/2009 at Northwestern 4:30 p.m. ESPN or ESPN2
11/07/2009 OHIO STATE
11/14/2009 INDIANA
11/21/2009 at Michigan State

* All-U/Varsity "S" Day
** Homecoming

Without any inside information, I'd have to say that the game with Eastern Illinois is almost a lock to be a noon kickoff on Big Ten Network.

If you are like me and don't want to watch Peter Angelos' MASN anymore than absolutely necessary, you will pleased to learn that you can see upcoming Nationals press conferences elsewhere. I just got off of the telephone with Kim Mosely of Comcast SportsNet Washington. She told me that Comcast SportsNet is also carrying the press conferences. Mike Rizzo's is at 4 p.m. today, Stephen Strasurg's is at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Also, a tip of the cap to CSN for "putting Washington on its jersey" instead of keeping Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.

Nats fall in 12th after late rain delay, rally - William World News

Nats fall in 12th after late rain delay, rally

Another Wild Night Ends With Another Loss - The Post
Nats waste surprising rally after rain delay - The Wash. Times
Once again, the Nats found another disappointing way to lose. Shairon Martis gave the Nats seven innings of 2-run ball, but the offense could not get any runs across. Then, in the ninth, the Reds closer Francisco Cordero walked Elijah Dukes. With Josh Willingham at the plate, the storm came and 2 hours and 10 minutes later, play resumed with Willingham getting a free pass. Josh Bard and Anderson Hernandez singled both of them home, but Washington was done scoring for the night. In the 12th inning, Ron Villone gave up his first run as a National and the game was decided, but no before Jason Bergmann allowed another. The Nats came up dry in the bottom of the inning and another tough loss was in the books. Only 75 or 100, depending on which paper you read, stayed until the end.

If you were watching at home though, you probably missed the rally though. As DC Sports Bog reports, Cox and Comcast subscribers were switched to C-SPAN 2 following the rain delay. The game was on MASN 2 which uses the C-SPAN 2 slot. The two cable systems screwd up, but ultimately the big screwup is Peter Angelos owning the Nats TV rights. Again, if the Nats TV rights were not controlled by a Baltimore concern that voted against D.C. baseball and kept games from fans for almost two full seasons, this does not happen.

MASN continues its anti-DC, Nats ways

MASN may be the Nats' home network, but not on Twitter - Nationals Pride
Would it surprise you to learn that MASN, the cable channel the Nats are forced to be televised by because of Bud Selig's corrupt bargain with Peter Angelos, has found another way to short the Nationals and Washington D.C. baseball fans? Of course not! The latest -- the MASN Twitter feed is overwhelmingly about the Orioles. Just another typical, anti-Washington, anti-Nationals move by the Angelos owned network.

Bad faith, bad owner, bad channel.

RIP Harry Kalas - William World News

RIP Harry Kalas

Harry Kalas
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- While milling around Nationals Park yesterday, Fritz got a surprising text message from a friend that Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas had collapsed and died. As details began to emerge, we determined that the ambulance we saw on the way into Nationals Park was probably for Kalas. The Nationals had a moment of silence for Kalas just before the start of yesterday's game.

I have been a fan of Kalas for a long time, though it was from his work with NFL Films and network radio telecasts of NFL games. It seemed like whenever we would drive out to cut down a Christmas tree in the country, we'd listen to an out-of-market game on Mutual that Kalas was doing. I also enjoyed his NFL Films narration. I might have seen him doing Phillies work a few times over the years and for some reason I remember watching a Cubs vs. Phillies game that went to rain delay Kalas joined the Cubs broadcasters for some lively banter -- that's good rain delay theater if you ask me.

Lastly, my great Uncle Bill, a lifelong Philadelphian and baseball fan (originally the A's until they moved to Kansas City, then the Phillies) used to correspond with Kalas regularly. After Uncle Bill died, his family discovered these letters. Kalas later acknowledged Uncle Bill's death on air.

Kalas will be missed. I'm glad he got to call a Phillies championship live last season.

Thanks for sharing this about Kalas. I believe you have told me before of that relationship he had with your uncle, or maybe it was somebody else. Fact is Kalas seemed like family to everybody in the Philadelphia area.

I never met him but always felt like he was my uncle, or grandfather. Yesterday was very tough for me.

The Nationals should be credited for their hospitality during this tough time for the Phillies. They initially offered to post pone their home opener in the wake of Kalas' passing, but the Phillies insisted the game go on as scheduled.

A sad day for baseball, not just in Philadelphia.

MASN details, but I still don't like the channel

JIM WILLIAMS - MASN ready for Opening Day and beyond - The Wash. Examiner
In a column that reads like a MASN press release, we get details about broadcast plans for this season. There is some good news:
"We have a new high home camera location on level three of Nationals Park. That means the camera is about 150 feet lower and closer to the field so fans will have a better look at the game action," Glass said. "We will also use X-Mo, a high-speed HD camera..."
Progress, yes.

Later Williams says this:
OK, I am ready for those fans out there that will simply call me an Angelos lover, but MASN is a quality regional sports network. As someone who has first-hand experience in building three of them from the ground up, I can tell you Glass, Cuddihy and their team are very well thought of in the industry. Both the Nationals and the Orioles have top talent in the booth and top-quality talent in the production trucks.
Okay, Angelos lover even if MASN is a top quality sports network, why wasn't it from day 1? The coverage over the years has been poor and anti-Washington. I'm not about to give them a pat on the back because they started figuring it out in year 5.

By the way, hope for rain for more reasons than spoiling the Orioles Opening Day:
"We are producing every Nationals and Orioles game this year in high definition," said Glass, MASN's Executive Producer, Operations Director, on what they have done during the offseason. "That way if say the Orioles' Opening Day game was rained out, then we can switch to the Nationals-Marlins game in HD."
Whoopee, maybe next year all games can be shown in HD.

The Nationals first televised spring training game is on MASN at 1 p.m. In a development slightly less shocking than Shawn Hill visiting Dr. James Andrews, this is against the Baltimore Orioles, so we'll get the black and orange coverage, instead of the red, white and blue. Just a typical move by MASN, force the cowardly, subsidized and corrupt Orioles down D.C.'s throat. I still want that network to fail miserably.

D'oh! Don Sutton gone, Rob Dibble in

I'm interrupting my NatsFest recacp post (look for it to roll at 2 p.m. now) with bad Nats TV news. NatsFanboyLoozer gets the credit for being the first in my Google Reader to let me know that Rob Dibble is the new color commentator for MASN's Nationals "broadcasts." Don Sutton is out and presumably headed back to the Braves. Dibble of course was a former Reds closer and is a big jerk. Why must this team be Cincinnati on the Anacostia?

Maybe I won't get cable back for the regular season after all.

The Atlanta Braves want to bring Don Sutton back into the fold as part of their broadcast team. I get the idea that Sutton is on board with that plan, but he still he a year left on his MASN contract.

Sutton was a Braves analyst for many years, who can't forget his "Braves Catalog" commercials during TBS broadcasts?

The big question for Nats fans is who would replace Sutton. Ray Knight already does the Nats Xtra, so he is unfortunately in the mix I think. Don Baylor shows up from time to time too.

I wonder if Frank Howard has any interest in broadcasting?

I'd be fine with Holiday doing play-by-play all the time, but Bob Carpenter has that role.

I recall Bacsik has some aspirations of radio/TV after he is done pitching, perhaps this could be his shot, though one former Nats blogger would probably throw a veggie dog at the TV.

NatsFest would be a really good time to announce that Frank Howard is part of the organization too.

20 Nats games on Ch. 50

DCRTV reports that over-the-air broadcasts of 20 Nationals games will be on channel 50 (WDCW) this season. Previously, channel 20 had carried Nats games, mostly on Friday nights.

This is great news, since Ch. 50 is in HD.

Remember that MASN still produces those games and the Peter Angelo$ owned network has only a half-assed commitment to HD/Nationals. It is 2009 and Angelo$ still can't figure out how to broadcast every game in HD.

Penn State vs. Michigan State on WJLA

Though the ESPN/ABC College Football coverage map is not updated as of last night, I have confirmation that Penn State vs. Michigan State is scheduled on WJLA-TV 7 in Washington D.C., so I know what channel I will need.

11/22 - MICHIGAN STATE at PENN STATE ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 3:30 p.m.

I am going to try and do Blue White Roundtable today, but no promises. I'm trying to get caught up from two days of taking care of my baby boy who has been sick.
