I really like broadband internet access, if not the service
provider.
I have a few things to say about some happenings down in
Georgia. Let me say that I am not suggesting how Georgia should
run their state, that is their decision; I am merely commenting
on the events of the day.
Lately, I have been enjoying reading the Opinion
section on one of DPC's newer affiliates,
gainesvilletimes.com. A day after we launched it, the
governor of Georgia pushed through legislation to change their
controversial flag, which included the Confederate battle flag
prominently. There have been a few colorful letters to the editor
about this subject.
What is so enjoyable to me about this is that the heritage
sic of that flag is argued as "states rights." There are
those who say the Civil War was fought for states rights and not
the institution of slavery. Um, okay, maybe, but the whole
slavery issue was the state right that was of the biggest
concern. Basically, these "heroes" fought for state power over
people. It was not thought that way back then of course, because
a slave was, at best, 3/5's of a person.
Now, some 140 years later, many citizens are outraged that the
state made the decision over the sacred flag and that
there was no referendum that they could vote on.
I cannot help but conclude that the "cause so grand" is now
victorious; state power has won although the supporters of it
lost. Oh, such delicious irony!
