Personal News

Lately, I have been reading an awful lot, mostly books that I read or was supposed to have read when I was younger. Currently, about 140 pages into The Great Gatsby. Prior to that, I was reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

There's Something About Hazleton - by Chris Grovich. A "tribute" to the NE PA coal town, which is currently all abuzz about a "messiah" visiting them. I spent four semesters at Penn State Hazleton, so I got to know this little burg pretty well.

Lots of conversions to XHTML 1.0 on this Web site, notably an updated Online Resume. Other pages converted to XHTML include Site Map, About this Web Site, My Education, and Press Release Archive.

I have decided to continue the conversion process, but I will not bother converting Weekly William News until the beginning of March. I will simply start over from scratch and create a new XHTML verion of WWN for next month.

Site News

Today is a special day for WFY2K, it was four years ago today (and four servers ago) that I first uploaded my Web site. I remember two other friends and I started working on Web sites a few days before and mine wound up being uploaded first. To learn more about the history of my Web site, surf on over to About This Web Site.

Since I have had such a high volume of updates to WWN lately, I am probably going to skip the regularly scheduled news tommorow.

Valentine's Day

For those who get to enjoy Valentine's Day, have a happy one and get lots o' luvin'.

Guys, still looking for that perfect gift? I recommend a Red Heart Shape Casserole by Le Creuset. It is the kind of gift that shows her just how special she is to you!

For those who are more inclined to say "Q#$@%! Valentine's Day!," remember, this is a holiday created by Hallmark and you should not let a greeting card company make you feel bad. With this in mind, I offer you two Web pages from our good friends at Suck.com and The Onion. There, you feel better already, right? Of course you do!

Today I began the conversion of this Web site to XHTML 1.0. The index page validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional according to the World Wide Web Consortium's HTML Validation Service. I have not yet developed the style guide for pages with XHTML. In the meantime, you can find the handsome W3C button just below the copyright on the bottom of the main page. Tommorow I will note this in About WFY2K. Most likely, this page, Weekly William News will be next. I do not have a time table set for converting the whole site.

After about a year of benign neglect, I have formally discontinued The Beltway @ Yurasko.net , save a for one site. I explained why on the index page.

Also, I have begun adding a time-stamp to the bottom of each page, under the copyright image. Some pages may not have them for a while since they do not get updated frequently.

Sports News

Tom Landry, original head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, my favorite NFL team, died Saturday evening, having suffered from leukemia. The obit is from the Dallas Morning News, who obviously had this prepared ages ago with "Tom Landry 1924-1999" as the title of their special section; not very sharp on their part.

Personal News

I have just returned from Brad's in New Jersey. He and his family was kind enough to host me for two nights at their new home in Tinton Falls, which from now on, should be called T-Falz I think. I arrived their Tuesday evening and on Wednesday morning, I took the train up to NYC for a NY Times Career Fair. That went fairly well, I thought. Following the career fair, I walked around in the city for a while, had a few hot dogs (it's a lot harder to find a vendor these days - come on Rudy, lighten up) went into a few stores and relaxed in Central Park.

Following NYC, I took the train to New Brunswick, met up with Brad and his friend Paula and dined at a T.G.I. Friday's in Piscataway (we think). Once again, Fridays proved to be overrated and pricey. I was not real impressed with Rutgers either, it is a handful of campuses for one location, so foot travel is not very feasible.

Sports News

Today it was announced that Penn State will play Southern California in Kickoff Classic XVIII. These two schools played each other in 1996 at KC XIV. In '95, I saw PSU play Rutgers at the Meadowlands, and I nearly saw them play Temple in '96, but it was right after Black Thursday, so I missed it.

Web News

This week was, in a sense, the coming-out party for XML.

Site of the Week

Keeping with a New York theme, this week I have chosen Steve Anderson's nycroads.com as the WFY2K Site of the Week. His thoroughly researched site is about higways and bridges, built and unbuilt, in NYC and suburbs, in addition to NJ, CT, and Philly. Major media such as WCBS 880, the Daily News, and no less of an authority than the Times have featured nycroads.com.

HAZLETON, Pa. - Since the day the prophet appeared at the bottom of their hill three months ago, barefoot and wearing a long white robe, the gloom has lifted off this old Pennsylvania coal-mining town.

It's Thursday which means that The Forum has a fresh issue.

Scott Pakin's automatic complaint-letter generator - This is a great site, it builds a non-specific complaint letter about someone. It is hysterical, overdone, not very specific, and different every time. Just for fun, I entered myself in to see how it would turn out.

Happy Belated Birthday Steve Forssell. It was actually a few days ago, but I wanted to make sure I acknowledged it.

Groundhog Day

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) With bitter cold and fresh snowfall as confirmation, part-time weatherman and full-time groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning and predicted six more weeks of winter.

Happy Groundhog Day to you. I never made it out to Punxsutawney to see the festivities, perhaps a lost opprutunity considering I don't ever plan on living that close to Punxsutawney again. I know people who went though and really enjoyed themselves.

Veterans of the star-crossed film Spitoon - The Motion Picture sometimes refer to this day as "Woodchuck Day."

Weekly William News is updated every Thursday and periodically throughout the week.
