Personal News

Yesterday, I concluded a little vacation, mostly at Erica's in Lewistown, PA, hence the late update and no Site of the Week. The centerpiece of the week was the trip to the NIT in New York City.

The whole thing began on Sunday with a trip to Altoona for Christopher's 21st birthday, belated happy birthday to him. We ate at Don Pablos, a decent Mexican place.

Sports News

The Nittany Lion Cagers finished in third place for the NIT. I was at the semi-final, which they played quite poorly in and were soundly beaten by Notre Dame. They won yesterday, vs. NC State, although I did not get to see it. Tonight, the Lady Lion Cagers play UConn, in the Final Four, in Philadelphia.

Penn State Newswire -
Television Perpetuats Voyeyristic Tendencies
The broadcasting of revealing information and images about others in apparently unguarded, real-life moments has become a staple of television programming today. Shows such as "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire," "The Real World," and "COPS" are highly-rated examples of this trend. Why are these voyeuristic shows the current rage of pop culture when they stimulate little social interaction and offer minimal news value, and why are we fascinated by watching things that we probably shouldn't see? Clay Calvert, assistant professor of communications law, has been studying this phenomenon called mediated voyeurism, a type of visual sensationalism usually for the sole purpose of entertainment through the glamorization of other people's misfortune. For the full story, go to http://www.psu.edu/ur/2000/voyeurism.html - Clay Calvert was one of my favorite professors at Penn State, I was happy to see his research highlighted in the Newswire.

I made it up to Pennsyltucky earlier in the week, first dropping off my brother at Penn State Altoona, followed by a trip to Lewistown to see Erica and family, who were kind enough to give me a birthday celebration, and finally to State College, to have lunch with Cliff at the Corner Room.

The Post : The Silenced Greaseman. A profile of the fallen radio personality and his life since he was fired for making a racist remark. - No one will hire him because he had crummy ratings, WARW used the slur as an excuse to fire an overpaid, underachieving, and untalented DJ with bad judgment.

Created the Weekly William News Archives.

Added the Favorite Bridges page, based on an e-mail I sent out to my recipient list to announce my new address. I also changed the graphic of the Site Map as well as noting the addition of new pages. I decided to have a little contest to go with the change. Look at the new graphic closely. If you can tell me where it is and where it came from by e-mailing me. Winners will be posted here.

The Post - Newseum Eyes D.C. Sites - My favorite museum may be moving, I am all for it transplanting to the District.

Kathie Lee Quits! - The Post's Lisa de Moraes' column on Mrs. Gifford is right in-line with the way I think about her. Tom Shales, who has written columns about Kathie Lee that are legendary offers a few quotes as well.

Collegian addresses editorial process breakdown - Apparently, a Daily Collegian staff writer fabricated a quote of Women's Basketball Head Coach Rene Portland. The story in question is now missing from the Collegian server. I think they ought to replace it with a retraction in the story; removing it hurts their credibility as much as the fabricated quote.

Site of the Week

Newseum.org - Since it is in the news, I figured this would be as good a time as any to showcase the Web site of my favorite museum.
