Proposed Gannett
Expansion
Special Feature to
Weekly William News
In June 2000, Gannett Inc. Co.
announced that it was planning to
buy newspapers owned by Thomson
Corporation and Central Newspapers
Inc. The latter acquisition will,
if approved, bring two new metro
dailies that will surpass the
Detroit News, currently the
largest readership in the company
other than
USA TODAY, in circulation. The
former acquisition was to involve
21 dailies, including strategic
marketing groups in Wisconsin and
Ohio, but two Ohio papers will now
be sold to Cox (2000/07/14).
