Penn State basketball defeats #22 Illinois (again)

Another casualty of the scandal? Other Penn State sports. People like me are so heartbroken we’re not giving them their due. It isn’t fair I suppose, but my motivation for the alma mater and everything about it is at an all-time low. Let me me correct that this morning — the Nittany Lions beat Illinois [...]

Graham Spanier is the second biggest villain in the Sandusky scandal

Members of Penn State’s Trustees Recall Painful Decision to Fire Paterno – The Times
I don’t think this article about the collective discernment that the Board of Trustees will change anybody’s opinion of that body and I am not suggesting that either. What is the important about this report are the details of Graham Spanier’s overwhelming [...]

Seven Nation Army: Wait, Guido D’Elia did something kind of right?

How The Song “Seven Nation Army” Conquered The Sports World – Deadspin
“Seven Nation Army” made a beachhead in American sports in State College, Penn. According to a 2006 story in the Harrisburg Patriot-News, Penn State spokesperson Guido D’Elia—who is still the director of communications and branding for the embattled football program—was inspired by hearing a [...]

Penn State: Rock n Roll Part II sort of dropped by the Blue Band

Blue Band Scraps Glitter’s “Rock and Roll” – Onward State
The Penn State Blue Band sort of dropped Rock n’ Roll Part II from its pregame. I wanted them to do this years ago because Gary Glitter was convicted in 2005 of the things Jerry Sandusky is accused of right now. The article linked above says [...]

My reactions to the Sally Jenkins interview with Joe Paterno

Joe Paterno finally put out his side of the story nearly two months after a grand jury indicted Jerry Sandusky on many counts of doing horrible things to boys. I am glad that Paterno finally spoke, even though he doesn’t say much. It needs to be mentioned that the journalist, Sally Jenkins, was handpicked by [...]

Outgoing coach Tom Bradley’s full statement: “Penn State will always have my support” – CDT
Tom Bradley, past interim coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, is likely going to be elsewhere moving forward. A lifer at Penn State, starting as a player and then a graduate assistant, position coach, defensive coordinator and ultimately interim head [...]

RIP Jeanne Hall

I was saddened to learn that one of my former professors, Jeanne Hall, died this past week.
Dr. Hall was a film professor — I only had her for COMM 150, the introductory film course. However, I knew her a little bit. In fact, even before I took her class, she introduced herself to me [...]

Tom Williams out at Yale; Could Jay Paterno be a candidate?

Yale coach Tom Williams resigns after lying about Rhodes candidacy – Campus Rivalry, USA Today
Yale Accepts Coach Williams’ Resignation – Yale Sports Publicity
Yale Bulldogs head coach Tom Williams has resigned effective the end of the year. A controversy over Williams’ Rhodes Scholarship claims that came up in November is the official reason.
When the Williams story [...]

What will Penn State’s branding be?

The branding of Penn State athletics (if not the whole university) is probably going to go through a major overhaul following the Jerry Sandusky scandal (just named AP’s #1 sports story of the year – pennlive.com). The familiar “chipmunk” logo may be phased out.

Twitter user @CasaNoVApsu knows what he wants in a new brand identity [...]

UPDATED: Might have jumped the gun on this: Wait, Sue Paterno is not welcome at Penn State campus pools?!

UPDATED: Maybe the story didn’t quite go down like it was originally reported:
Penn State Pools Closed Over Break To Everyone, Not Just SuePa – Onward State
So, maybe somebody pulled a fast one on the Patriot-News reporter Sara Ganim, perhaps as “revenge” for breaking the Jerry Sandusky story. We’ll see.

It just gets worse at my [...]
