Patterson, Nats Stress the Positives to Beat RedsThe Post
P John Patterson had another big outing, going 8 1/3 before being pulled after giving up a two run homer. He admitted that he is very stressed pitching for Washington, since the Nats tend to not score when he is on the hill.

RF Jose Guillen hit his second homer in as many nights, raising his RFK total to 3. He has 20 on the road.

MICHAEL WILBONThe Wild Card Is a Do-able PropositionThe Post
In what might be his first or second Nats column, Wilbon says the Nats are in great shape being only 1 1/2 back in the Wild Card race and that it is still a “Disney flick.”

Club plays rotation rouletteThe Wash. Times
I love this headline. Anyway, expect to see John Halama on Saturday and Matt White (8-5, 3.23 ERA at Class AAA New Orleans) on Sunday.

With Lease Deal Imminent, Nats’ Sale Could Follow SoonThe Post
I am not quite sure why the ballpark lease needs to be signed before an owner can be picked, but it does. This should help bring ownership even closer to coming to fruition.

Speaking of ownership, USA Today Sports Weekly indicated yesterday that Jeff Smulyan is said to be the favorite. Jim Williams has more in today’s Wash. Examiner.

Career Minor Leaguer Is Defying the Law of AveragesThe Post
A long feature on would-be folk hero, Rick Short. The 32 year old journeyman is batting .392 in N’awlins. He singled in his first MLB at bat with the Nats earlier in the year, but was promptly sent down. He has remained in AAA because he “has no natural position.”

Now, I may not a sabermetrics guy, but it seems to me that someone flirting with .400 in AAA is probably worth playing over a guy TWO HUNDRED POINTS LOWER and making lots of errors at shortstop at least part of the time.

USA Today also has an article on Short in today’s edition.

NATIONALS NOTEBOOKZimmerman’s Call-Up Is Up in the AirThe Post
The injuries to 40% of the rotation is keeping Dutch Zimmerman on the Harrisburg roster. Perhaps with Ryan Church suffering a broken toe and possibly headed for the DL, there will be room for Dutch.
