First off, congratulations to Ted Leonsis for having his purchase of the Washington Wizards and DC Ticketmaster franchise approved by the NBA on Tuesday. Combined with the teams he already owns, the Capitals and Mystics, Leonsis has created Monumental Sports & Entertainment. Here is the transcript of his press conference from earlier.

Now, I have been saying for a long time that the team was not going to be renamed Bullets and Leonsis confirmed it today at his big press conference, according to DC Sports Bog. I would not be surprised if it is a condition of the sale. Leonsis did say he was “partial to red” though; presumably white and blue will be included in any new uniform scheme.

While the Wizards name doesn’t excite me, I don’t care enough to change it. It least it has alliteration. Also, the Bullets nostalgia is kind of odd and perhaps a little revisionist. Now, I had a limited sample size, but in 13 years of going to Fairfax County Public Schools in Vienna, I never once saw a kid wearing Bullets gear. Team wear was not ubiquitous like it is today, but there were always Redskins stuff, even Capitals stuff plus other NBA teams. Also, the Bullets were near the bottom in merchandise sales in the mid-90s when the change was announced.
