Maryland’s newest expressway, the long-awaited and debated Intercounty Connector (MD 200) will open between I-370 near Gaithersburg and MD 97 Georgia Avenue near Wheaton. For the first few weeks, February 22 through March 6, the ICC will be toll free, after that it will have all electronic tolling.
I’m skeptical that the ICC will provide much relief for Maryland drivers now or in the future when it is completed to I-95 and US 1. It should make getting to BWI Airport faster (and more expensive) for people headed there from Rockville and Gaithersburg and people commuting from northern PG County to the I-270 corridor, but I don’t think it will provide much relief to the Capital Beltway. Perhaps if it is extended to US 50 it could actually make a dent in Beltway-traffic.
Lastly, I think the whole route should have been called I-370.
