The first big day on the 2011 Washington Nationals calendar is here — pitchers and catchers report to Viera, Fla. All of them are in the best shape of their life too and ready to make some noise this season.

In reality, many of the players, not just pitchers and catchers have already arrived in at spring training and begun working out. A survey of the top 3 beat writers reveals that CF Nyjer Morgan was the first to say he was in the “best shape of my life” according to Bill Ladson @washingnats. So, I guess each of them gets a prize.

Pitchers and catchers is actually a pretty anti-climatic day — it is more about spring coming than baseball players beginning organized workouts. I have said before that in an ideal, more poetic world, it is snowing here when spring training begins down there. Not that I am complaining that it was 65° yesterday — today is a more seasonable 34° and dry.

By the way, I don’t care about Jayson Werth‘s beard, though the song “Needle in the Hay” comes to mind when I see him.

Lastly, I don’t care about Elijah Dukes and neither should you.
