The Washington Nationals return to the field after yesterday’s unforeseen postponement with a split doubleheader today. Game 1 is at 1 p.m. and game 2 is at 7 p.m. The Atlanta Braves are the visitors.

Though no active Navy personnel were apparently among those killed yesterday, the Nats ought to have a Navy color guard present the colors as there is no civilian equivalent that I am aware of. The National Anthem ought be sung or performed by the Navy chorus and/or a Navy band. Singing “Anchors Aweigh” would also be a welcome inclusion. Similar arragements ought to be made for first responders from the District ought to be made part of a game’s pageantry as well. I am not up on protocol, so I cannot say whether a combined Navy/DC Police presence would be appropriate.

A black arm band on a uniform sleeve would be a simple, appropriate tribute, though I expect the Nats to wear their blue stars and stripes uniforms instead. I would not be surprised if they wear the blue stars and stripes jerseys for both games or even the rest of the series and homestand.
