This summer, two competing pickup broomball leagues will face-off on Saturday nights in Northern Virginia.

Capital Broomball, Springfield

Capitol Broomball, which I finished my rookie season in over the winter, has a summer season at The St. James in Springfield. Capitol Broomball plays on a full regulation clean sheet of ice. Equipment (broomball shoes, sticks, helmets) is included with registration.

Cost: $120 – REGISTER NOW

From the Capitol Broomball:

Though the St. James is running it, things will mostly be the same. You’ll still sign up as an individual (or with a carpool) and teams will be drafted. The cost is $120 for an 8 game season (pickups not included). Games will be played on Saturday nights with the first game starting at 6:30 pm. We will have equipment for players to borrow (helmets, shoes, sticks). If is recommended, but not required, that players wear gloves, shin pads, elbow pads, and a mouth guard.

Medstar Capitals Iceplex, Arlington

Up in Ballston, the Medstar Capitals Iceplex will also have a Saturday night broomball league, starting June 15. This looks to be more casual or entry level and will likely be played as “small rink” — between the blue line and the boards. Sticks are included, but bring your own helmet.

I’m an advocate for broomball overall, so this tyranny of choice is a bit frustrating, but my hope is the game is grown in the area, even if it would have been nicer to spread it out. My plan is to stick with Capital Broomball, but if I was less experienced, I’d be at the Capitals Iceplex.

I have compiled a Google Calendar of DC area broomball. Other sessions will be added as they are announced. Check with the rink to confirm times, availability, etc.
