ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Goodies Frozen Custard opened Memorial Day weekend in the old Mutual Ice Building.
My family of four visited on Sunday. The unseasonably cold, gray weather didn’t deter us or the crowd that visited.
By late afternoon, vanilla bean custard was all that was left. Between the four of us, we had two pints, a sundae with M&Ms and chocolate syrup and a Sprecker’s Root Beer float. That set us back $32.
Currently, payment options are cash and Venmo. No credit cards.
The scene
The old Mutual Ice Building is freshly painted blue. Stainless steel milk tubs have been turned into planets with a variety of colorful flowers. Signs of gas stations and a Route 66 pump are out too. It’s a little kitschy. Oddly enough, “Goodies” isn’t really displayed.
The jammin’ oldies coming from the speakers were a pleasant surprise.
History
Goodies started as a food truck and was supposed to open this location last year, but…you know.
The Mutual Ice Company originally imported ice and then made its own. It lasted until 1969 (Party ice – History Sidebar)
Location
Goodies is at the SW corner of Commerce and Payne in Old Town. There is no onsite parking, though nearby streets have meters. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the King Street-Old Town Metro station.
