Over on DCski forums, it broke that Massanutten is adding new trails over the next several years. The announcement came in resort’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Highlights

  • 2021- 2022 – new “most difficult” terrain under the existing lift 5 lift line. They aren’t long, but every little bit helps.
  • 2022 – a new long trail off of lift 6 and a connector trail between Paradice and Diamond Jim
  • 2023 – new detachable quad lift 6

I think that’s December dates for the last two bullets. Let’s hope the schedule keeps.

Good news for Mid-Atlantic skiing

“Massa-nothin” is the knock against Massanutten ski area since time immemorial. It’s…not big. But as I learned in 2014, Massanutten has wonderful black diamond trails.

This expansion could be a game-changer for DC/Virginia area skiers. Massanutten is about 2.5 hours from the Beltway near James Madison University. It’s vertical is nearly 1,110 feet and it’s one of the more scenic Mid-Atlantic mountains. These new expansions get it closer to the size of Whitetail with more vertical. Perhaps this and Timberline’s rebirth will pressure Vail to improve their Pennsylvania properties.

Getting there

There are a few ways to get to Massanutten – Google Maps suggests I-66 west to US 340 south, but I went the longer way taking I-66 west all the way to I-81 south and then down to US 33 east at Harrisonburg.
