Don’t let winter get you down and give yourself a reason to look forward to Tuesday by signing up for the winter 2023 Capitol Broomball season. Remember, don’t hate winter, use it!
Broomball is similar to ice hockey, but in special shoes, balls and “brooms” instead of skates, pucks and sticks. Capitol Broomball, also known as District Broomball, is a co-ed league that plays at Tucker Road Ice Rink in Prince George’s County, Md. It’s just a few minutes from Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, the Capital Beltway and Wilson Bridge.
Capitol Broomball provides sticks, shoes, and helmets are available for new players to borrow. Most regulars own their own equipment, especially helmets.

First-time Capitol Broomball players can join in the preseason pickup game at no cost. Regulars will be providing instruction to all newcomers before a scrimmage.
- Schedule begins: Tuesday, January 10, 2023
- Cost: $120
- COVID-19 precautions: Masks are now optional, subject to change. Keep up to date with vaccination – it’s the right thing to do.
Why broomball is fun
If you’ve ever wanted to play hockey, but never had the opportunity, broomball is a good substitute. Similar rules and game play, but much more accessible than ice hockey. If you can run, you can play – no skates needed.
Capitol Broomball is a competitive, yet collegial league. Lots of coaching, lots of encouragement. Teams are reshuffled for every season, so you get to meet lots of people. Currently, our age range is from early 20s to late 50s, so don’t feel like your time may have passed. The sprinting gets you in better shape by the third game.
If I can be a goal a game player, think about about how well you can play.
