The 2024 Washington Area Bicyclist Association Bike to Work Day is scheduled for May 17 – this Friday. The event is FREE.

An annual tradition

2022 Bike to Work Day swag, including a water botle, granola bar, bike bell, map, Nutri Grain bar and pink t-shirt.

Throughout the D.C. area, there will be pitstops in the morning and afternoon giving out swag like bike bells, water bottles, maps and snacks. If you are lucky, you might even get a quick tune-up. Plus, if you are one of the first 20,000 to register, you get a t-shirt.

I have been a pretty regular BTWD participant since 2017, even in years when I had no work to bike too. In Alexandria, the mayor has been showing up at John Carlyle Square. I talked to him about how the Holmes Run Trail is never whole. I probably will again this year. Along with asking why he hasn’t advocated for my Metro bus route. Again.

This year will be my sixth BTWD. The event was created by The League of American Bicyclistsin 1956. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association‘s first BTWD was 2001. Over 10,000 cyclists are participate annually.

"George Orwell" looks on as Mayor Justin Wilson and a BTWD volunteer make announcements.

This year’s t-shirt is orange. Other recent colors are raspberry, pink, yellow, light blue, green and purple. Why can’t we ever get navy blue? I’ll take a photo of all of them together for instagram over the weekend. Maybe by then, I will have found the photo someone took of every Bike to Work Day t-shirt.

BTWD registration is open now with pit stops in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. It’s rain or shine and four days out, it’s looks like it could go either way.
